Hello,

Looking for replacement brushes for a J era 12V 3 brush dynamo.

Also, if anyone has a set of 12V field coils in very good condition or can advise on someone who can rewind field coils that would be helpful. The field coils currently in the dynamo function but the insulation on the wires is questionable.

Lastly, any thoughts on whether or not to turn the commutator on a lathe so it is smooth? The commutator in this dynamo has ridges that don't polish out with 1500 grit emery paper. Am concerned that the more material we remove from the commutator, the further out the brushes will be from their holders and greater potential for insufficient spring pressure on the brushes as well as the brushes not being supported as well.

Thank you,

Bill Putnam,

Hi Bill do not use emery cloth on the copper com as it could get bits of the abrasive grit embedded in the com,use aluminium oxide sandpaper 600 grit
If you clean it up in the lathe that fine but use a junior hacksaw blade to scrap the mica between the segments to just below the surface.

Appreciate the tip, will look for aluminum oxide sandpaper as you describe, and clean thoroughly.

Any suggestions on a cleaner/degreaser that will not damage the original insulation on the windings?

Petrol sparingly on a non fluffy cloth as anything like methylated spirits might dissolve the shellac that was used as an insulator on the wire, shellac is dissolved in meths to apply.

Theres a spray solvent used for cleaning electric motors, as you need to pressure clean the field coils to remove any oil etc, CRC Lectra clean.
I removed the cotton bindings on mine because you cant clean them without doing that, and bought the same material to re wrap from the UK.
Place the coils onnto some moisture absorbing paper when you spray them. Another option is Mineral turps which wont affect the shellac insulation.
Check the coils resistance first.
