Well, as the old saying goes.... ‘If it ain’t broke - Don’t fix it’.... Well, I should have known better... Whilst doing a check over on the J2 in preperation to taking it out for the first time next month, I noticed that the the fuel tank strap securing nuts were both missing... I found some 5/16” whitworth nuts and fitted them with a jentle nip, but secure enough to hold the tank in place...
Silly boy... Drip drip drip... The damned tank is now leaking... Upon removing the tank, I see previous repairs with lead and body filler... Hopefully, it’s repairable, but if not, I need to find myself a replacement..
So, does anyone have a spare (good) J2 fuel tank (preferably for the later ‘swept wing’ model) that they would consider selling....?
Many thanks in anticipation,
Mark T Boldry

Hi Mark, I have a round back tank, not sure what from, it has always been dry stored with light surface rust. A small contribution to my rebuild fund would be welcome….. I can’t seem to upload photos but I can email you should you be interested. Bob

Bob
Not meaning to interfere, but what is a "round back tank" in this context?
Regards

The rear of the tank, facing the back of the car the tank has a curvature as opposed to the flat back on j2’s and f2’s. |

Bob, The J2 changed at some point from the flat back tank to the slightly curved one. The Parts List only has one tank listed so presumably if an early one needed replaced, you got the later pattern. In the absence of a specific change point all we can do is go by contemporary photos. This is the curved tank on J3437, the last cycle wing car, so it’s probably safe to assume that all swept wing ones had the curved tank.

J2 #3343 is 94 J2's prior to the change to swept wings, has original petrol tank which is the later curved pattern.

Thanks Simon for the clarification that’s the one I have available now, thus not correct for a f2. |

From past personal experience on Sportscar Metalcraft, not a company I would personally recommend for accuracy in panelwork and quality sadly.
Steve Gilbert is thoroughly recommendable

Richard - I've not heard of Sportscar Metalcraft, but the company suggested above by Oz34 is Sportscar Metalworks from whom I have purchased new tanks for both my early TA and J2. Both tanks were excellent in every respect with all the small details and fittings attached in exactly the correct places. I have no direct experience of Steve Gilbert but understand that he is a master of his craft.

The company may now possibly work to a different standard compared to years ago when I had issues with their accuracy and presentation. Various parts returned for full refund.

If Mark has opted for a stainless steel tank, is there a special technique for painting it?
