ok chaps need some opinions on what Tyres would you buy putting price to one side there are 4 choices.....from what I can make out it seems the Blockley (Dunlop pattern Repro) tyres are the popular choice although I'm liking the Michelins just for the fact they're an original manufacturer and this tyre is an original pattern so looks period with the period naming........what are your thoughts.....cheers

I used Brockley tyres on my old NB and was pleased with them, the only draw back was for the tyres to have a flat spot if left standing for some time. These caused a bit of vibration for a very short time. I used the Excelsior 4.50 x 19 3 block pattern tyres on my old L2 Magna and was pleased with them. These tyres came from Longstone Tyres.

+1 for Blockley Both my race D and and 12/12 M are on them and I like the grip and wear I get from them. Just putting the tyres at 45psi when I store the cars has resolved the flatspot issue for me.
I would make the argument that Michelin only make these tyres as a side job (0,0000000001% of their production optimistically) and are not as committed/specialised as the mored dedicated manufacturers

Russ, I’ve personally not experienced any flat spotting with the 4.00 x 19 Blockleys on my J2. I have the tyres ar 32 psi and, sadly, it often sits for months without being used.
As for which tyre to use, to my mind the Avons and the Michelins just look wrong. I think Barry Walker once commented that he reckoned the Blockley tyre was one of the most significant developments for our cars as they just look 'right'

Russ Thanks for your epic stories and good luck in the coming seasons!
Tyres 4.50 Blockleys on my L types, looks great. runs great and the winter flatness disappears within a few miles.

hey thanks chaps I'm going to buy 6 tyres it would seem the Blockleys are the ones to go for I thought I'd throw it out there to though it's good to get opinions from those experienced in these things......I was wondering how the hell I was going to muster myself to part with £2k for 6 Michelins.....so I'm more than likely going to go with the 19 x 4.50 3 stud Blockley tyres......thanks chaps.......one more question where can I get a set of nice leather edge bound floor mats and a rear boot mat.......cheers

I have Blockley 4 x 19 on the J and like them.
Have experience of 4" and 4.5" on the F. Very sluggish on 4.5 but a delight on 4".
Both are on their standard diffs... |

I have met and chatted with Julian who owns Blockley. He races a pre war American v8 engined monster and he bought Blockley because they made tyres for his car that helped him become competive. No one else would make the size for him. So the owner is a racing enthusiast who knows what he wants of a tyre. And it shows. Mike. |

If I’m not mistaken, Julian Majzub didn’t buy the Blockley Tyre Co, he actually founded it. Their premises at Blockley, Moreton-in-Marsh are not easy to find

Simon is correct, Julian Majzub set up the company when he was unable to source suitable tyres for racing.
I was very happy when he produced the 18 inch tyres suitable for use on N types. They transformed the way the car handled.

Russ, rather late in the day, yet another vote for Blockley. I have to say I have never noticed the flat spotting although I know about it.
One further comment; I agree with a lot of people who think that 4.50 section is over tyreing a J or P and they both look better and handle better on 4.00 section.

Both the Blockleys and Longstone products are excellent but both suffer from flat-spotting, which as Onno notes can be avoided by significantly over pressuring the tyres when storing the car. Both makes are considerably wider than the marked size compared to original tyres and to my mind this spoils the look of them, particularly on the smaller cars. |

As I said, I’ve not found any problem with flat spotting and I think the 4.00 Blockleys are a pretty close match to the originals.

Just to add my 2 cents worth I have the 19x4.00 Blockleys on my J2 and they transformed the handling over the former Avon tires I had on. Never have had an issue with flat spotting at all and it often sits for six months over winter without use. I use 32psi in them
