Another car from Leigh Peffer's 1950s photos, with K3-like bodywork. Leigh appears happy to pose in it.

Thanks, Oliver. The photo was given to me by USAF Colonel Leigh Peffer in 1963. He was stationed in the UK prior to that and interested in sports and racing cars. I assume the photo was taken in the UK in the 1950s. Leigh came home with a Brooklands Riley. Here is the last I have of his MMM photos, about which I know nothing. But then, for 50 years I knew nothing of the Evans N Type, so thanks again.
John

Looks like the ex Mel Jones/Patrick Gardner J2 that eventually became a J4 Replica.Maybe Mr Hawke can confirm this,Oliver. PS if the N Type photo is in the uk it will be BLL493 |

Both the Triple-M Register and the NAMMMR have NA0634 with the registration number as BLL492 not BLL493. Below is a photo taken of the car in about 2004.

Just wondering: When did BLL 492 go to America?
And I'm presuming that it can't have been BLL 491 as that one was red in the 1950s and being used as an extra farm hand during those days?

Isn't Oliver saying that if the photo had been taken in the US it would have been BLL 492, but as it was taken in the UK it was BLL 493. And he simply pointed out in passing that he had recently worked on BLL 491. Seems clear to me. Or am I missing something?? |

And to me, Simon, I was puzzled too!
Quite apart from that I'm wondering why it's not BLL 491 in the picture or in fact BLL 492? If 492 was still in the UK in the 1950s, I suppose it could have been either 3? I'm guessing 491 isn't a possibility as it was being used on the farm in the 1950s and was red at the time? I'm sure Oliver can enlighten me on this score?!

Sorry all. I'm totally confused as to BLL491, 492, 493, et al. I was simply pointing out that the ex-Evans NA is BLL492 and resides in the US.

BLL 493 had a green body when I owned it in the 1970's. I think BLL 492 was in the UK in the 1950's.

Well it's definitely not 491. If you read Pat Greens article in the 82 yearbook there is a photo of 493 in 1950 with it wearing no aero screens . So it could indeed be 492.oliver |

Yes Ollie, that J2 is Mels old car J2988. The photo is most likely Mel at a SE Centre event between 1956 & 1959 as the car still looks pretty standard apart from the 12" brakes. Those are probably my doors!
JH
Single spot lights like the one fitted must have been quite fashionable for rallies - J2396 sported one very similar for a while back then. |

I believe this might be the same Evans NA and it's thought it's BLL492. However, I have no way of proving that.....
