Could this be at Bellevue? The mechanic working on the car next to the M.G. (L-type?) seems to be Bill Kite which is actually my only clue.

What makes you suggest an L type - is it the sloping radiator ? That is some busy workshop. Could be a P type engine on the trolley to the left.

The ERA might be R7B the white Arthur Dobson car.

There seem to be another odd detail about the MG in the photo. Although the front wings have the center rib, the side lights seem to be mounted to the outside of the rib. The brake drums would appear to be 12" and clearly the windscreen supports have the "B" nuts, so I agree, it looks very L-type.

What an evocative photo, certainly looks like an L type (L2) and I wonder if it might be the Ashton Rigby car or one of the Alpine trial team L2s?

That is not a L2, the firewall has the typical P-Type sealing for the bonnet, also the visuable part of the steering columm is to short for an L-Type Carl J2 4362 L2 2036 |

And that definitely looks like a P type engine on the trolley on the left. |

I suspect that this is a posed photo to illustrate what a busy place the garage is. It is difficult to imagine all these people working effectively on cars jammed so close together, without tripping over each other all the time. The air would be distinctly blue! I can just hear the photographer saying "OK everybody, look busy, and don't move a muscle for the next few seconds".

Lot of fascinating comments, but you have all drifted away from Cat's original query. Which Workshop is this - is it Bellevue ? The answer is no, it is Thompson & Taylor's Brooklands Workshop. See page 64 of the 2002 MMM Yearbook.

Cat I don't think this is Bellevue Garage. Wilkie showed me some pictures of the garage many years ago and whilst my memory will have faded over the years I do not recall seeing windows like that. I also do not think they employed that many people regards

You are right, Terry. it is not Bellevue. It is definitely Thompson & Taylor. The windows are the give-away.

Yes, definitely T & T. I think the ERA is more likely to be Reggie Tongue's R11B though - R7B has a chromed radiator - so that would probably date the picture to between 1936 and early 1938. |

The ERA looks like R4A to me. The car next to the MG is Powys Lybbe's rebulit 8-cyl. Talbot, the mechanic is Les Wilson, the Talbot reappeared in 1938, see also The Motor,1 & 15 March 38. Dont know anything about MG's, L Types that is. |
