Today while out at a friends in my Magna a lady cycled by then stopped and asked if my car was a J2, she then told me that she owned a J2 in the 1950's and her brother had a TC, she then returned with two photo's of her and her brothers cars taken around the south croydon area. The J2 appears to have a cut down drivers door plus headlamps mounted close together would this car have had a trials or hill climbing history and does either car survive today ?.

That looks like it's J2504 & yes it had an extensive pre-war trials & racing history with H.B. Prestwich. Was the lady you met called Janet Jeffree?

David,
The other car looks to me more like a P than a TC. Note front apron with tunnel for starting handle; straight rather than curved headlamp/wing support brackets, 12 inch brakes; front friction dampers etc, etc.
Cheers,
Dave |

The other car is almost certainly a PA and as its registration number is very close to mine I would guess it was also registered in 1934. Nick |

Jeremy. XJ is a Manchester registration so I would be interested to know if you, or anybody, has details of the J2s pre-war driver H B Prestwich. Thanks. Ray |

Dads list of MMM reg nos has JN 4719 down as PA0699, It's not in the current register. The first oiwner of J2504 is down as R Newey of Dudley. It's the same H.B. Prestwich (Altringham) who is associated with L0311 & later K3028.
"Spotters" will have noticed that 12" brakes were fitted during Janets ownership.
Dad must have come accross the car at some point during Janets ownership as there is a gap from 1937 until she had the car, then "no news since". It's not on the curret register either.

Also it seems as though the offside bonnet panel was changed to one with two rows of louvres. And the windscreen is decidedly odd with very square upper corners. All academic of course if the car doesn't exist any more. |

After checking both reg numbers on our works dvla parts look up system they are no longer on their data base, that means they have long since gone to the scr@pyard or are laying in the back of someones shed somewhere.
Jeremy Janet told me she had the cable brakes replaced with hydraulic ones when she owned the car.

Just noticed this thread. My first car (in 1962) was a 1934 Morris 8 open tourer registration JN 5221. This would support the 1934 PA view. I think JN was a Southend on Sea registration.
