Hello,
Does anybody know of a photo of an M-Type in action is a rally. This is a great drawing, maybe someone has the photograph. Any other photo or link would be welcome too.

| Doesn't look like a control to me! Nor does the car look as if it's been at it yet, it's spotless still! And the dark haired man standing behind the car looks remarkably like a Works employee (from other pictures), doesn't he?! Looks like an early example of photoshopping! |

A real Monte Carlo Rally control ( a check point, I assume) or a staged factory photo, is indeed one question.
But also, the differences between the sketch and the photo are interesting: the drivers wear helmets, maybe also goggles, the navigator is handing his rally book, or card to the control person, the driver has his right hand on the wheel instead of the windshielmd frame, and it appears that the control people are leaning towards the navigator much more. Another question could be; Is the photo staged after the sketch, or is the sketch made from the photo?

She should know, her grandpa owned the Prince Henry in the Vauxhall museum...

VC 1931 would have been issued before December 1929 - assuming that it is a genuine number- which might make the task easier of identifying an 'M' with those headlights, the extra spare-wheel mounting, the horn and do on.
Interestingly, the artist reproduces exactly the angle of the n/s headlamp.

The M type VC 1931 was first registered to a Mr. D Jeacock in Coventry in September 1929. It was then driven on the 1930 Monte Carlo Rally by Francis Mortimer Montgomery.
Read more about him and his later exploits in Safety Fast February 2012. Modesty forbids me to say who wrote the piece, but it is jolly good!

Here are a couple more of VC 1931 taken just prior to departure and upon arrival in Monte Carlo. Does the Triple M archive hold any reports concerning F. M. Montgomery's entry or his exploits on the 1930 'Monte'?

F M Montgomery entered his M Type in the 1930 Monte Carlo Rally, carrying Competition Number 139 and finished in 73rd place out of 87 starters.
Not to be put off easily, he entered the 1931 event, presumbly with the same car, carrying Competition Number 12 and this time he used the name "F Mortimer Montgomery" - much more impressive. The cunning plan paid off, and he finished in sixth place out of 18 starters in the "under 1100cc" category.

Thank you Colin. Cowbourne is a latter day hero of mine and I have purchased three of his tomes as my interest has expanded. His efforts makes researching the period a pleasure and not the potential chore it could have been without his gargantuan efforts.
Back on topic, what I'm really hoping to find is a contemporary account of his rally. There are of course mentions and images in the period motoring magazines, but no interviews, articles or first hand accounts of what must have represented a significant achievement for a 'baby' car at the time - ranking alongside that of Samuelson in his Sportsman's Coupe.

| After reading the above I visited my brother's workshop to see a similar Bosch horn hanging on the wall, but he says he needs it for a Morgan project. Perhaps they should have lost the horn and three spare wheels, saved a bit of weight and finished a little higher up. |

Thanks to all for the photos and comments. I printed the two photos at the check point and the car doesn't look as clean as it appears on a computer screen. Maybe not as 'weathered' as in the Monte Carlo photo, but not spotless either. Photo retouching, in a real dark room, before the digital age of PhotoShop, could have made a real check point photo into a marketing/sales illustration for the magazines.
I'd like to find out if there are other photos of M-types in rallies, in books, old magazines, or personal collections.
