Hello,

I bought this photo on Ebay, and I want to know the date of the photo, and also the place of the trial.
The driver is A.J Milburn on MG J2 J3588.
J3588 I bought in July 2013, and I search all the photos and information on the MG.
Sorry for my english, I'm Swiss and speaks French.

thank you

I can't throw any light on the provenance of the car or the venue, but isn't it a terrific picture? It shows some nice little details such as the MGCC badge and the screen pillar mounted mirror and it even seems to be a single colour rather than duotone!

MGCC Abingdon -Abingdon Trial 1936 ??
In Roger Thomas' Book there is a picture of another car in exactly the same location ( MG works? ).
I'm sure Colin Butchers will have the answer.

Since you mention it Graham, isn't there one of Maurice Toulmin in a Cream Cracker?

Yes,thats right Dave.Definitely at the factory too.
A.J.Milburn also did the Colmore Trial, once in a NA and 3 times in a midget, presumably this car.
It seems your car has some interesting history Christofer

By the way, welcome to the Forum Christofer

Hello Christofer

And a welcome to our web site from me. Your English is very good.

We have several experts on trials history and I feel sure you will receive the information you require. I agree the picture looks to have been taken in the place as the one of J M Toulmin driving TJ5000 in the 1935 Abingdon to Abingdon trial. The photo is in the M.G.Trials book written by R Thomas.

J3588 & it's competition career is listed in both "75 Years of J2 MG" & "How They Ran". A.J. Milburn was quite active with the car pre & post war. By the 60s the car sported a F**d engine before restoration.

Cristofer; I have something on this car in MBHs' files, if you pm me with an e-mail address I'll try & find it over Christmas & send it to you.

Regards,

JH

Thank you for all that information, it is really good!
For the photo, Abingdon seems to be just because the photographer who took this picture lives Abingdon is written behind the picture.
When I bought J3588 I knew nothing of its history, it had remained in Italy since 1978.
The seller had bought the owner's son, and neither knew the MG, the ad was on the internet in Switzerland.
J3588 spent Swiss technical inspection yesterday, it rolls now.

Again thank you for all your messages.

Sorry to be rekindling this old topic, but, Graham, where did you learn Milburn entered an NA once, please? Plus, did you mean the pic on page 69 of Roger Thomas' book or is there another one I am overlooking?

Thanks!
Cat

Hi Cat

AJ Milburn did the Colmore 4 times- 34-7
1934 was in an M type registration KV1638 and the others were all in 847cc cars so not an NA.

His result in 34 was NA (no award) so this might be the confusion

Hi Cat
2013 posts!! Can't remember yesterday let alone 7 years ago. Bit befuddled at the moment but will look into it when I can. Suspect it may have been 1934 as Kevin points out.
