Hello all
Here is a photo of another MG at Great Auclum - probably in 1953 and, I think, driven by R W Christmas. I think the car may have Le Mans history. Any information about the car and/or driver would be most welcome.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Steve
Welcome to the Forum - the source of an incredible amount of information on the ohc MGs.
Our printed 2014 Register shows JB6158 as being PA chassis number 1711. The car survives in the USA and is noted as being "ex Le Mans Team car and then musketeer".
There is no reference to either MBK999 or MG4463 in the printed Register.
Regards

JB6158 was number 58 in the 1935 Le Mans team of George Eyston which was known as the Dancing Daughters. It was owned by George Shelley in Florida up to 2012 but it has now been sold and I had heard that it went back to England. Here is another example of the difficulty of keeping in touch with cars when they are sold.
Sister car PA1667 (JB6157) was purchased by Miles Collier in 1936 and raced in the ARCA series in America pre war. It was rebodied after an accident and resides in that form in the Revs Institute (Collier) Museum in Naples, Florida.
The third car PA1661 (JB6156) whereabouts are unknown.

Actually, JB6158 was number 56 in the 1935 Level Mans team. I had the pleasure of a hot ride in this car in 2001 when it appeared with it's team partner number 57 for the first time since 1935.

Here is another nice picture of JB6158 - courtesy of Ferret Fotographics. The driver is Basil Bowman who bought the car from Richard Christmas, and the event is Brighton Speed Trials in 1954.

JB 6158 was driven by Sam Nash in the 26/27 July 1935 M.C.C. Torquay Rally. The three cars had been hurriedly converted back to trials cars after the Le Mans race in June. ( 80 years ago this weekend!) The other cars were driven by Lewis Welch and Freddie Kindell. But it is unknown which of the other cars each drove. Unless you know! The Collier car was of course driven again at Le Mans again in 1939 by Miles Collier and Lewis Welch. MBK 999 was a J4 with a special body owned by C. V. Coles and is/was a well known car. Mike

MBK 999 had a chassis of Geoff's own construction, not J4 based - I have a pic of the bare bones somewhere. It did reputedly have a J4 engine though, which then went into one of his rebuilt cars.

MBK999: Does anyone know the whereabouts of this car today? It isn't registered with this number now so it was probably robbed as a 'nice number' at some stage. I don't think Coles retained it himself. The engine was as stated mostly blown J4 which Coles built up from parts. It had Coles' own chassis and Fiat 500 independant front suspension. Also had front brakes from a TR prototype. In 1964 the engine (& gearbox?) from this car went into Coles' first J4 special which was built on the chassis of a J2 (I have the chassis number somewhere!) and re-bodied in J4 style by Watling Greenwood at Uckfield. I have also posted on the page for MBK999.

MG 4463 (PB0649) was shown in the Triple-M Register 1993, which was included in the 1993 Yearbook as belonging to the late Freddie Yhap.
MBK 999 is shown as "J" (with no chassis number) in a copy of the "J-TYPE INDEX 1999" which the late Mike Hawke gave me. There is a footnote to this entry which reads "The J4 special which donated engine etc, to J4004 rebuild".

John, Geoff entered MBK as a J Special (as was often the custom at the time for special constructors to give a nod to the engine manufacturer). It wasn't however based on any J chassis. It's included in the MBH notes for completeness.
