Hi,
I've been trying for the last few orders with S&V to get hold of a length of the aluminium threaded rod that bungs up the four holes in the crankshaft.
At the time of writing, the search function is down, so I can't search what the diameter and thread is. I seem to recall about 1" diameter.
S&V have been out of stock each time, and I need to get hold of some.
Any other sources?
Does anyone have any left over that they would sell me?
Thanks Paul. |

Hi Paul, 1" x20 tpi if memory serves, I have a tap you can borrow if your threads need a clean up. Some one local to you should be able to screw-cut a piece of aluminium rod for you . Have you shot preened your gears yet? Garry |

Hi Gary, Thanks for the size. The crank is currently at the engine man (been there for nearly a year now!)so I'm not sure what state they are in.
I wouldn't even know where to go to get the gears peened, plus I'm not really sure why I need to.
My Hardinge lathe is apparently perfect for thread cutting, but I haven't got a bleedin' clue how to actually do it! I guess a die is available, but probably not cheap. |

Hmm,
I had my crank and rods crack tested at Kiersley Airways near Stanstead Airport. I wonder if they could do the peening?
Do they literally just have to do the teeth? |

hi Paul, If you get stuck for the plugs send me a few inches of 1" dia aluminium rod and I will thread it for you, no cost. You don't need to do anything with the gears other than Clean them and look for missing teeth. Regards, Garry |

Paul, I'd alway understood, and I may wrong, that the plugs were not all ali, but some were steel and by varying the material and the length of individual plugs, the builder went some way towards balancing the crank. Stand by to be shot down by the experts!

Yes I had read that on the forum recently.
I do know the ones I drilled out from my crank were aluminium though.
Regards Paul. |

Thanks Simon, I will let the engine builders know.
What length should they be?
This does lead me to another question, that I hope doesn't show my ignorance too much! It's about the sequence of events
So the crank is ground and yet to be cleaned thoroughly. There are no plugs in the crank at present and no balancing has taken place. The block has not been line bored yet to the best of my knowledge.
At what point in the process do I clean stuff and insert the plugs into the crank since I assume it's virtually impossible to clean out the crank with the plugs in place?
Do I clean the crank, insert the plugs into the crank and then have them line bore and balance?
Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul, Your last sentence is the correct order of attack, but you could have them line bore the block and trial fit the crank before putting the plugs in. Garry |

Paul, I have nearly 5 feet of 1 inch aluminium bar,if you need some let me know. I live near Ringwood, but could post what you need. The plugs were a mixture of steel and ally, but I used all aluminium then had the crank balanced including clutch and flywheel fitted on the end. Good luck Nick.

Hello Nick,
Thank you for the offer, however I have some material, so I'm good to go with Garry's very kind offer to thread.
Regards Paul. |
