I'm not entirely sure what parts I require here as I don't have a picture of the setup.
This relates to the take-off at the rear of the gearbox for the milometer drive reduction box.
I have what I think is the gear/shaft, and there is what looks like a small brass plate (about 1/2" diameter) still in the gearbox that would be at the end of the gear.
But I definitely don't have the part that screws into the gearbox onto which the reduction box screws.
Are there any other bits that make up this assembly?
Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul, it may help us if we knew what the MG is and what gearbox you are referring too please?

Sorry.
P-Type gearbox. 829 over 165 and 4 over 10 stamped on the box.
Fits in here:

Contact Ian Marr in Canada (Farley on the forum). He has manufactured all the bits you need. Very nice!

Pauly, what you need is follows: driven Gear and housing
and a 90 degree angel drive (is not a reduction box)
May be a wormgear for the main shaft inside the gearbox. They are the most time worn !
A sleeve for the driven gear i made it for me self on a lathe, all other parts you can find from S&V.

Excuse me for asking but we're the right angle drives fitted to the N types
Thanks Malcolm |

So this was what I thought was the drive gear, but it's a lot longer than the one shown in Horsts photo.
Is mine the wrong one?

Hi Paul, If you look here you will find some useful articles about the gear box by Barry Foster. http://www.mgmmm.com/library.htm If you clean the casing around the selector hole you should see a number 4 over 10. this is the ratio for the Speedo drive gears on a PA. These gears are available from Sports and Vintage. The brass plate you refer to is a bronze bush that holds the driven gear at the correct mesh with the drive gear which is attached to the output shaft in the gearbox. You should really change these as a pair. I don't think that the right angle drive you refer to has any reduction gearing on a PA and mine works fine without one. If you have the gearbox out I would suggest that you pull it apart and check the bearings. I have done this yesterday on my L1 and although it drove OK one of the cage rollers came out in pieces. Good luck with the jiggling.

Hi Paul. Horst may be correct in that it looks similar but perhaps not identical to the drive from an M.G. 18/80. This is the one I had to replace in my car. Keith

Yup - the gearbox is completely in bits - I had another thread in the tech section on that little job!
I should have bearings on their way too. I think this drive is the only missing gearbox part. It is stamped 4 over 10.
I had located the Barry Linger article and used that to do a certain amount of the dismantling, so the other two links to articles are very useful - thanks, I will start reading!
I'm trying to locate a faceplate for my lathe to allow me to machine out the rear gearbox housing for an oil seal as well as the front engine housing.
Keith, I have an aluminium piece that looks very similar to the lower bronze threaded part. I wonder if they are a pair??

Horst, the last email I got from you was from 11am this morning. Is this the one you are referring to?
Thanks Paul. |

Paul, I have not seen one in aluminium before, but if it does the job! I have sent you an email. Keith
