Whilst looking through some old books in a National Trust shop came across a book titled A Motor Racing History. There were some pictures of pre war MG cars inside so I splashed out and bought it. On getting home and looking at the book it turns out to be a first edition printed in 1933 and is the history of MG cars up to 1933. Some good pictures and descriptions of lots of races. Never heard of the book before. Has anyone else. |

Now you just need to find Circuit Dust and Grand Prix by the same author. A highly collectable trio.

A good find! I also have a copy, and then there is Wheelspin by C A N May.
Other books with MG interest are Wheels at Speed and Blue and Yellow - these are about Prince Chula also of course known as Bira.

I think Prince Chula was Prince Bira's cousin.

Just beaten me to it Colin !. The book Blue and Yellow was written by Prince Chula who, as Colin says , was Bira's cousin. |

'Combat' is one of the classics of motor racing literature. Very scarce these days. Barré Lyndon was actually a nom de plume and in addition to the books Matthew mentioned he also co-authored 'Motor Racing and Record Breaking' with George Eyston.
His real name was Alfred Edgar and, having begun his career in journalism, he published at least ten children's books - I've traced 'The Abbeygate Cricket Cup', 'The Nine O'Clock Mail', 'The Schoolboy Airmen', 'Knights of the Wheel', 'Skid Kennedy, Speed King', 'Where the Cars Roar', 'Earthquake!', 'The Schoolboy Treasure Seekers', 'The Wandering Speedmen' and 'Burst Tyres' under his own name.
He broke into the big time with his first play, 'The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse', which starred Cedric Hardwicke. The London production also ran for three months on Broadway and the play was later filmed, starring Edward G Robinson. Edgar/Lyndon moved to the United States in 1940 and worked as a Hollywood screenwriter, becoming a US citizen in 1952. He died in 1972, aged 76.
