Does anyone know the purpose of the hole on the block side of the ear trumpet oil filler?

Hi Ian,
it is the crankcase vent for a J2 engine,

Hi Ian
There should be a circular brass gauze fitted to this hole, that has normally gone missing over the years.

Stuff some panscrub material tightly down the tube to minimise the number of flies etc which want to die in the oil.

Thanks for the clarification. It just seemed a little too large for a vent so I assumed that something was attached there. I take your point about the gauze Ian. I assume that the proper filter is not available anywhere.

I wonder if it is possible to get a copper washer which is a tight fit into the hole and solder a piece of gauze to it? It doesn't sound too difficult. Perhaps one of those crushable sump washers would do. What do other people do?

Occasionally these gauzes can be found at Autojumbles in ex -Army type stalls. The gauzes themselves resemble the brass/ copper vents which used to be fitted to the sides of old mattresses. Mattresses always have been a source of treasures!

You may find that new elbows do not have the hole as I did to my cost. While driving down through France this summer at 36 degrees C most of the oil was blown out through the breathers in the Rocker Cover. Needless to say I now have a hole with a gauze filter.

Be warned!

Any chance that someone could post a photo of one the filler necks with the gauze in place? Mine must be a new one as it doesn't have either the hole or the gauze.

Here are pics of an original. Never seen one without the vent hole.
S and V produced very nice copies of this part complete with the correct brass gauze filter. Very important for crank case breathing to have this vent.

Well, well, mine was supplied and fitted by Baynton Jones when they built my engine and guess what, it doesn't have a vent hole. That might explain the oil escaping from the cam cover vents?

Speaking of gauze vents, some of the early Rotax or Lucas DK4A distributors had similar vents in the base casting

This is an interesting topic. My filler has no vent hole and no casting numbers. Perhaps mine is one of a replacement batch - it must be at least 25 years old.

Nigel there was triple M spares supplier in Yeovil back in the 1970's who I seem to recall made repro ones of these. Maybe they were sold with out the vent hole.
