From this photo taken at Ards in 1932 the pointer would look to be black (and the spider springs light coloured/silver).

(Yes, I know the photo is captioned wrongly - Barnes was driving number 29 that year)

They look to be a lighter colour than the damper body (black) - they generally seem to be red...

Red seems logical, the photo I have in my L1 manual shows the 2 springs and pointer in a light mono colour. The pointer is not black. But these images were re touched for enhancement.
Why would you paint a setting arrow/pointer in black against black?

Barnes actually did drive car no. 30 in the 1932 Ulster TT, though his initials were F. S. (Stan) and not the stated T. S.
The photograph shows Hugh Hamilton in C0279 sporting the radiator unit off C0257 which was present at the TT as spare. Before practice, Hammy was told to undo the changes he had made to the supercharger for the German GP and rather than amend his own car, the whole unit off C0257 was transferred to C0279. The number 78 showing on the radiator was painted on for C0257/Hugo Urban-Emmerich's entry in the German GP a month earlier.
When Hamilton crashed his car (and himself) in practice, the unit was placed back onto C0257 and the entry was taken over by Stan Barnes. His own entry with C0266 (no. 29) was taken over by his brother J. D. (Donald) Barnes.
Full story on pages 276-297 of Combat.

Thanks, Cath. We're hopelessly off topic now, of course, but this picture shows, I think, the modified supercharger and radiator with number 30 painted on the radiator grill.

Can't help thinking the brakes would have been inadequate two up in a supercharged racing car with the small drums that year.
