Ron Baker, the owner of J2823,died on Monday. He was 90. Ronnie and his son Paul were well-known in the north-east as expert restorers and ran a bodyshop in Hetton-le-Hole near Sunderland. They actually built the bodyshop premises themselves as well as a bungalow apiece nearby! Their silver and red Y type was a regular winner at Northern and Border Shows and they also owned a superb Morris 10-6 which they had restored.
J2823 is a red cycle wing car, again meticulously restored and now virtually completed. It would certainly have been back on the road next year and Paul will doubtless ensure this in memory of his father. Until recently Ronnie used to spend most mornings at the workshop working on the car or making parts for it.
We will miss him up here, and not only for his ready supply of cakes!
Sorry to learn of Ron's death. I supplied him with a Leonard Reece camshaft for his J2 several years ago and I enjoyed our occasional chats over the phone back in those days.
