Spent most of today making a new firewall for the M. Though I say it myself, I've done a pretty fair job. It's an almost exact replica of the original which I used as a pattern. Trouble is the original has a cut out for the steering column which is tight one side and 6 or 7mm clear the other. It's one of those "only I will see it" things.......but can I live with it??? By the way, if I remake it, instead of using ali coated ply, is it ok to use 6mm ali?

Peter,
Are you certain that the steering column is centered on the dash panel recess and the steering column is in the correct position? Either of those can shift the column at the firewall one way or the other.

Good point Lew, I'll check but the little notch which accommodates the manual adv/ret rod is smack in the right place currently, although I guess that will rotate around a little.

What adhesive did you use to attach the aluminium?

Peter,

I have to do the very same job for mine is there any chance you could make a card or paper template for me as the one I have is badly wrong as are the tank shelf and side pieces which will also be redone.

I personally think 6mm aluminium will be far too heavy and would dtick with the ply / aluminium sandwich

Thanks,

Neil

The aluminium is wrapped round the ply like the valances on the chassis below the bonnet - no glue involved. I changed to solid a few years ago - it stiffened the scuttle quite a bit (and the chassis too with modified Minor brackets fitted).

Wrapping something thin like ali or vinyl around wood or metal is always easier if it's glued flat first I think. The best glue I've ever used for this type of job is heavy duty spray on carpet glue. I've remade the firewall today Lew as the steering column was in the right place.
Neil, I can make a pattern with pleasure. Email your address and I'll get it done
