Rob,

Good luck with this project - I'm glad someone stepped-up to the challenge.

Your photos show the starting handle bracket fixed to the front dumb iron. A close-up of how this is mounted would be interesting (when you have a spare moment!)

Brian, you may be interested in mine as fitted to a P.

It fits neatly inside the tunnel on the apron;

Rich Hardy cut the bracket itself and may still have one or two. As you can see, I used a tall body mounting bracket to fit it. The dumb iron joiner is slightly too small diameter, so I made up a brass sleeve which you can just see.

Just note if talking to Rich that mine is sized for a new starting handle which are larger diameter than originals but it certainly does the job very well.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Brian,

I have just picked up your post, having just returned from Stoneleigh.
I will take a photo for you tomorrow.

Best wishes,

Rob

I haven't seen that sort of starting handle bracket on a J before, usually the engine mount front hole bearing is sufficient, even using a starting handle made from 1/4 steam pipe! You will however need the centre of the front chassis crossmember clear in order to fit the front valence screw holder (I'm sure there is a better name for this).

The P type engine and front valence are quite different.

Here's the bracket and side view

The engine is a pre-war Morris Minor sidevalve (identified by Garry Waiting) and we think it has a J2 flywheel.

It will have a J2 engine!

Please note the red paint still visible after being buried for over 50 years!
