Before it is too late, is it possible to put a .pdf copy in the Technical Document Downloads on this site?

Hi John - nice to hear from you. My MKII came out post war I believe, as a complete saloonette (but Kevin's comments are correct that one of the MKII's was advertised in Jan 38 in the Auckland region - I think this was the Roycroft car although I am not sure - I have photos from the late 40's and early 50's but nothing earlier so it may have come to NZ in the 30's?- any further info would be appreciated)
Regards to your family.

Welcome to our Forum, I note you list owning the 18/80 but not a Triple-M car? Quite a few or our members own examples of both types.

Barry refers to the Tigress Registration JO29. I saw this car lying out in the open in the late Morgan Marshall's garden in the early 1970s.

He also had a very nice and original NB 2 seater which sat outside on his drive for many years, it had a cracked windscreen where a part of the guttering broke off and fell on the car. I wonder if anyone knows of it's identity and if it survives - hopefully as a standard bodied car and not one of the too many Ns which have been rebuilt in the style of a K3.

There is another 18/80 with a NZ connection that is the one I sold about a year ago. The earliest record of it was when someone called Marlow or Marler, the writing is a bit indiscernible, had it in 1938, next record is that it was owned by Colin West for a number of years from 1955, until Sue Naylor bought it in bits in about 1981. It was rebuilt and was then repatriated to the UK in 1989. There is no record of it having been registered in the UK prior to it going to NZ. Its NZ registration was LH 4432.
This is the car at an event in NZ, perhaps one of you can tell me where?

George I didn't know Morgan well in person, but corresponded with him a lot in the 60's. However I know someone who knew him well and I think Morgan left him a car in his will. I'll ask him and see if he knows which car it was.

I also have reference to an open 18/80 of some description which came here prewar. This advert is from the Wellington region in 1937

Unfortunately we don't know whether it was a mark 1 or mark 2 but is not likely to be your old car John as I believe that yours was originally a 2 seater tourer?

The reference to a large luggage compartment is interesting as that is not usually said about any of the 4 seater 18/80s but would appear to rule out a speed model. Presumably we are therefore talking 4 seater tourer

I hardly think you could call the boot of an 18/80 4 seat tourer-"large", unless you use it with the lid in the down position and stack suitcases on it.

Agreed but there is more room than a speed which has room for a toothbrush or two.

I've also just looked up the prices of a Mk2 when it was new

2-seater open Sports: £625
4-seater open Sports: £630
Sportsman Salonette: £660
4 door Saloon: £675
Deluxe Saloon: £699.

This would make the 1938 advert seem to be for a 4 door saloon, as opposed to the salonette. The Roycroft car mentioned by Chris fits this description so is likely to be that, chassis number AO302

George I enquired as to whether Fred Body had done anything with it, but I had the following reply: -

"Morgan kept the cream NB as he fancied it would make a good trails car—even thought the back seemed impossibly low for the purpose. He never got round to using it preferring ‘KX', the narrow bodied MkI speed model 18/80. (The car that went on display at the RAC recently see another thread) The NB had resided under the roof overhang at No1 Chapel Green Lane (rather than in the garden) for a number of years covered by various ‘tarpaulins' and copious amounts of newspaper. Later Peter Evans extended the single garage at the back in Hazel Lane to accommodate it and it was kept in far more salubrious conditions. As far as I can remember it was complete and the windscreen in one piece.
The parking lot under the overhang was then the home of ‘SU' a rather lovely grey MkI saloon— now, alas, sporting a rather unfortunate speed model body. (That car is well known to the Vintage Register)
After Morgan's death the NB went to Roger Stanbury but soon he had some unexpected issues so had to pass it on. He did tell me who bought it and, as I recall, it was a well known name—possibly an MMM one so I am rather surprised at your enquiry. Quite who’s name it was rather escapes me now I’m afraid—well it was 25 years ago ! As far as I know Fred didn’t have anything to do with it."

I hope that helps.

Nick,

I have scanned versions of both the MkI and Mk II 18/80 manuals. They came with the set of Triple-M ones that I provided a few years ago and which are in the Technical Documents but I didn't include the 18/80 ones at that time. I'll email them to you shortly.

P.S. I also have the Parts Lists - I'll send them as well.
