Are these your 'go-faster' holes?

Tony,
The original body timbers from 2112 do not have these holes on either side. I don't think that 2451 did either but I scrapped the remains of the scuttle many years ago so I may be wrong but I don't think so.

Yes, Terry
It reduces wind resistance when travelling with no bonnet.
Downside is that it creates an inconvenient draught up ones shorts, at speed

Does it also produce a strange whistling sound?

I believe the holes related to the way the bodies were clamped three at a time in a frame for transport. This is another reason by the way why I believe original bodies were as near as possible exactly the same. Notice there is no provision to adjust for different dimensions.

The front of each body rests on two felt padded cross bars bolted to the frame . Butterfly nuts are used extensively.

Here is a close view showing a crate with the bodies end on. These include the escutcheons on the boot lids.

Interesting your peg theory - however all you pics seem to relate to the rear of the body tub. My holes are at the front on the bulkhead. It's a shame that there are no pics of the inside of the tubs whilst they were in the transport frames.
What is the relevance of the pic of the rear of EO4917?
Interestingly we used these holes as internal body supports when we removed the body a few years ago.

John
The whistling noise is usually me anxiously looking for a suitable spot to stop to have a pee !! Old age and all that.

None really. Look on it as a Christmas bonus at no extra charge although it is really just me rambling - you know old age and all that.

Thanks Tony.

To the right of your timber Tony are the old timbers from my car (2M 1802) which have an identical hole on one side and none on the other. It looks like my theory has room for improvement.

A friend tells me late M-type timbers he has do not have a hole in the same place.

Happy Christmas

Interesting - so I am not alone.

Does your hole appear to be machine made, as mine or was it produced by some handy previous owner with a brace and bit ?
I think my nearside hole is probably in this category.

Looking at old pics I realise that the hole was present in my original body work [1st pic] and that there was another in the kit of body bits that I got in 1977 [2nd pic] - this kit is where the nearside hole comes from.
So the 1st is original to the running wreck of 3338 that I was using at that time - but I have no idea from which car, or even cars, the body kit came from.

So the search goes on - any more holes out there ??

The double entendre police will have a field day !

Thanks to those forum members who have sent drawings and sketches - keep them coming.

The drawings have been started & it will certainly be a long task.

Cheers

Tony

In 1967 four lads from Liverpool said that there were
four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
and though the holes were rather small
they had to count them all.

I just thought that I'd turn you on to that !!!!

Brian.

The hole appears to be machine made but stuffed with a piece of hessian at some stage.

I have made some progress on the M-Type ash frame dimensioned drawings, however I do need some better detail.

I have based most of what has been drawn to date on the article by Barrie Dean called "M-Type Bodywork", however I only have Part II of the story. When you use a lot of his dimensions in a 3D drawing they just don't fit, as sometimes the dimension points are a bit vague.

I am keen to complete this to produce dimensioned components, but need more accurate data to proceed further. Can anyone assist ?.
