All,
I have noticed that many Guarantee plates, including the one on my J2, have a hole drilled at some random location in the plate. Does anyone know why this is the case? It does appear to be intentional.
Thanks, just curious!
Brent

Interesting point. Mine is without any extra hole(s). Could it originally have been for a fuel or cable route

One theory that I find convincing is that they are the holes for the bolt that secured the top of the passenger foot rest. The holes were probably drilled form the inside once the foot rest was positioned and the chap drilling the hole didn't necessarily check to see if he was going through the guarantee plate which was not necessarily precisely located.

Hello Chris. Intrigued to know what the A120088HP engine number on the plate might denote? (Realise that the car is special in many ways in view of its Lester history!)

When last I raised the subject, the response centred around places where the petrol pump may have 'rested' at times in the car's existence.

Hello, Dick.
Thanks for your interest but I have no idea what the extra stamping is for. It must have seemed important to someone in the past. The general untidy appearance in the picture reminds me that there is still a lot of restoration work to be done !

On a J2 the guarantee plate is a long way away from the petrol pump. My money is still on the footrest bolt.

In the case of the J2 the consistency of the holes or damage to the guarantee plate suggests it happened in the factory.

As Simon points out the J2 guarantee plate hole appears to coincide with the fixing for the footrest.
This early J2 guarantee plate has no sign of damage. Is it possible the earliest J2's had no footrest or was the footrest an optional extra?

Sam,
Thanks for the link to the other plates with possible footrest holes on the edge. I had that part of my plate cropped out of the photo but it definitely shows the side hole as well as the extra drilled in the middle of my plate. Here is a better shot of those holes. Any other thoughts on that big middle hole? I can see it in 1980s era pictures of my car when it was restored, so I believe it dates back a while. But who knows. Thanks to all of you for entertaining my question.

Brent,
My vote goes with Simon - errant drill for the passenger foot slope mounting tab. How a worker could drill through something as important as the chassis plate is beyond me. Perhaps it was years later during re-carpeting... and why no nut or bolt head witness mark around the holes in the middle of the plate?
Another interesting tidbit is the sequential chassis number is etched in the plate while the engine number is stamped - presumably on the production line and depending on which engine was actually installed.

Although this is not a competition that I want to win....someone drilled 4 holes in my guarantee plate...3 small and one possibly for a footrest...my car is ‘early’ so ripe for later modifications!

I have several cars with chassis plates that bear a single hole drilled in close proximity to the centre of the plate just like the picture in Brent's posting and this has puzzled me for some time. I did wonder if it was done by some licensing authority such as when vehicles were " scrapped" or exported ??? It seems unlikely that it was done by a careless mechanic particularly a large single hole in the centre of the plate. The plate in Steves post with four holes does look like the latter. |
