Before I go to the trouble of having one made, I wonder could anyone please help with a steel cross tube for an ENV type 75 preselector gearbox to fit a K series MG ?
The tube should measure 23” X 1.5” dead size OD, wall thickness approximately 1/8”.
Thank you,
Chris. |

I am told that the cross tubes are a standard pipe size, so should not be any trouble sourcing something from your local plumbing supplies store. Nover having owned an ENV box, I can't speak for the validity of what I report.

I found this size of thick walled pipe at a local machine shop when I renewed the cross tube on my N. I think it is a standard size. Geoff |

Thanks for replies. I had this problem with so called standard size pipe before and had to get a 1.1/2” pipe ground to OD size between centres.
It ‘s essential that the OD is a dead size as the gearbox bell housing is bored to an exact size.

Chris

Thanks, Adrian. The site looks promising, I’ll just see what transpires before I do anything immediately.

Its all in the terminology. PIPE outside diameters are usually larger than the nominal size. So 1-1/2" pipe measures 1.900" outside diameter. Various wall thickness are available, so standard ( or schedule 40 ) pipe has a wall thickness of 0.145" to give 1.610" inside diameter. Extra strong, or schedule 80, 1-1/2" pipe has a wall thickness of 0.200 so bore of 1.50".
TUBING is measured and sold in outside diameters, so a 1-1/2" tube measures 1-1/2" outside diameter. Various wall thickness are available and these reduce the bore. Bob

Having just measured up the cross tubes on a couple of ENV type 75 gearboxes I have, the actual OD size in both cases is 1.498”. The bored diameter of the gearbox bellhousings is 1.500”. Obviously, a clearance of approximately 0.002” is required for fitting and it seems to me that these tubes were especially prepared for accurate fitting to the gearbox.
Thanks for all comments.
