Hi,
Seeking help on what the Light (I have assumed it is a light) is on the bottom right of photos attached of K3004? If light why does the lens look dark?
cheers ross kelly

Not sure if its helps. In the dismantled parts of my two J2s there were two ( I call them secondary lamps ) one of which looks very similar to the lamp in your photos. I believe the lamps to be Rotax, one is plain glass and the other dark glass as in your photo. One has all chrome plated body and other is just chrome bezel and painted body. As you may be aware I do not know the complete history of both J2s, only that both were completely dismantled in 1964 and the lot shipped to Cyprus, the owner died before he could make any progress. The cars were in two places in 13 packing boxes, all mixed together and most of the second J2 was dumped in a builders yard lockup store. If you would like photos let me know and I will post.

Thank you Simon and Chris,
Simon the photo of J3755 shows (i think) that the item has some depth to it.
Chris, if you could post photos of the Rotax light that would be appreciated.
many thanks

Hello Ross, here are the two lamps. here I am trial fitting to J4129, I do not know which of the J2s they were fitted to originally for sure, but my only lead is the one original front cross bar ( which definately came off J4129 )only has one extra lamp fitting bracket attached so probably the lamps came off J2353, being Rotax as well supports the earlier J2 theory. I took these photos whilst I was trying to work which J2 sported the lamps last September. Also whilst on the subject, also some photos of the original leather bonnet strap that was from J4129, unusual in that it has rope bottom ends, anyone any ideas ? Also the Brooklands screens, damage possibly from the 1935 accident that took the lives of Dudley Cottingham and Marjorie Gush, all were in the discarded parts store. The original main windscreen was also badly damaged, being restored by Mike Dowley.

Furthermore Ross, I have one more secondary lamp that came with the parts, this is also a rotax, but different to the other two which are a matching pair. I suspect this was off J4129 originally, it has clear glass lense, there is only the one with dark lense.

Thank you Chris fabulous photos. I do not envy the amount of work you have ahead of you with the J2 projects.
Would you know if the matching pair of Rotax lights have a model number on them?
cheers ross

Hello Ross, I will have a look and let you know. Yes quite a challenge to get the two restored, in particular J4129 will be as original as possible as most of the retained parts were from this J2...and then there is the history.
J2353 was a standard J2, no particular history, had a ' mulliner ' type bodywork, none of which has survived so this car I can rebuild as a J4 upgrade, only the chassis, engine, back axle and dashboard are original from this car. I will try to take close ups of the lamp for you today.

Ross, I can give you the following information from the lamp. It is Rotax, there is a small 26mm x 13mm oval shaped tab just behind the terminal socket which reads Rotax ( MA ) Ltd K559 Willesden.
There is a 20mm round Rotax button on the top. The actual glass diameter inside the bezel is 95mm ( 3 3/4" ) and the bezel diameter 113mm ( 4 1/2" ). The lamps have an angled support bracket that obviously fits on the headlamp cross bar, the lamp is secured upside down to the bar with the terminal on the upper most surface. The terminal is a bayonet type of 18mm diameter, only one of the lamps has a bayonet plug, so I will need to look for one more. I will upload detailed photos today of the lamp.

Ross, I have turned the securing arm slightly for you to view.Hope this helps. The other lamp is identical only that the main tub is painted black and not chromed as in this lamp. The glass actually looks darker than in the photos, I took the photos on bright sunlight to try to show the reflector and bulb. Hope this helps with your original query.

Similar, but not the same. Someone got it before me. I was hoping to put one on each of my J2s, but not to be. Ashleys came with the plug which is missing on mine. Also his did not have the damage to the screw aperture and the abrashions on the glass, mine took a lot of cleaning to getting it looking like this.

When I looked at this light, my first thought was that it was some kind of wartime precaution that couldn't been seen from the sky, have you ever flown at night and noticed that the cars only seem to have front lights, but then I noticed that Simon's post shows a car with two bobbies and it is dated 1933, so that theory goes out the window.

Ross,
I think the lamp is definitely a fog lamp. It appears to have a dark presumably orange lens and is mounted on the near side of both the K3 and J3 which would make sense in order to illuminate the edge of the road. I don’t however think it is a Rotax lamp. There appears to be some sort of bracket / moulding on the right hand edge of the rim and almost no body on the back of the lamp (the J3 photo illustrates this). I’ve owned a few Rotax fog lamps over the years and I’m sure that isn’t what we have here. So the question remains what is it? Greg Clarke might be able to shed some light (excuse the pun) on the subject as he has had countless pre war lamps through his hands over the years.
Good luck, Ian.
