Anybody know a source for steel backed kingpin bushings? I know of a good source for TC and others with 3/4" kingpins, but haven't found 5/8" MMM size.
Am looking into having a production run done of them as well. It's probably 1,000+ pieces . . . .

Tom I think that Morris 8 kingpins are 5/8th and are quite common over here . My guess is that they will be available from Morris specialists. Geoff

Thanks guys. Question is really about steel backed bushings. All bronze ones are readily available.
When 2 of my TCs were freshly restored (TC0272 & TC0273), one had steel backed kingpin bushings, the other all bronze from Amsteer. Both cars were driven a lot. The bronze bushings wore a whole lot quicker than the steel backed ones.

Leeds Bronze https://www.leedsbronze.co.uk was the source for the bi-metal (also known as wrapped bushes) supplied for the TC.

You would need to give them an appropriate specification.

Hello, Horst.

As a matter of interest, did you use the main bearing in your P type as shown or did you have it white metalled ?

Regards,

Chris

Hello Chris,
this is the main front bearing in my new restored engine with a phoenix crank. My enginebuilder was a great fan for these solutions instead white metal...

Only the flange for crankshaft end float was made with white metal.

Here the center bearing on the workbench (

..and the rear Bearing

Thanks for that, Horst.

I was particularly interested because I once made some main bearings from lead bronze or aluminium bronze (can't remember which) for my 2 litre ERA engine.(This, following some expert advice !) They were not white metalled but the crankshaft was made of EN40B .The centre main, however, which, if I remember correctly, was 4. 1/8” diameter, enormous size, had duralumin shells as per the ‘E’ type ERA engine. The earlier roller centre main having proved unreliable.
Any comments from our technical experts would be most interesting as to the use of unmetalled bearings with correct specification crankshaft.

Best regards,

Chris.
