I have been researching the history of PB 0538 since acquiring it, but have been unable to ascertain its correct registration mark. Unfortunately the original MG Works despatch record incorrectly shows the registration number of another car!
PB 0538 was first registered in Leeds in January, 1936 and sold to Jack Everingham, who lived In Chapletown Road, Leeds, where he owned a butcher’s shop.
Searches at Cemetery Road, Abingdon, for the registration number have been unsuccessful and despite extensive scrutiny of Leeds registration records held at Wakefield Archives, first registration documentation for the car has not been found. The Kithead Trust has no records for the car.
I was interested to read on this website that original documentation details are now held in a centralised English registration database. What are the required procedures to enable access to this data please? Any help or other information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Powerplus. |

"a centralised English registration database" is a new one on me (unless it refers to DVLA). I am not at all sure that this exists - why not ask the author? |

It is a pity the Wakefield Archive cannot help as they were very helpful when I was there last month. A telephone call may help. Other wise, may I suggest trying to find living relatives of the butcher, and they may have a photograph of the car. Happy hunting, and happy new year!

Try the Kithead Trust (www.kitheadtrust.org.uk)? They hold many of the paper licencing records for vehicles registered up to about 1948, although there are some gaps. For £10 per registration number they will search their records and may be able to determine which number, if any, matches to your chassis number. For a further £30 they will provide two certified copies of the records which should be sufficient for the DVLA to reissue the original number.

Everinghams Butchers were at 30 Chapeltown Road. Apparently they were still there in 1960. Premises are long gone.
The shop is the boarded up one at the street corner. In 1903
If your car was registered in Leeds then the registration would have begun with either xNW xUA xUB xUG or xUM |
