There is a 1933 J1 Special Sports for sale at auction:
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1101265.

The Text seems to indicate there was a factory option for a J1 Special Sports 2 seater!?, surely this was a J2?

Any comments?

GB..

You need to remove the final full stop for the link to work

Or this will take you straight to the auction site

Looks like a J1 someone (surely not the factory) that put a J2 body on and called it a special.

J0490 is listed in the factory records as a black four-seater tourer with green upholstery. No mention of a 'Special Sports' body. The body looks like a J1 body that has been shortened and a J2 fuel tank fitted along with J2 wings all round. It was apparently owned by a J. Cheeseman from Oct 1934

If the surname is actually Chiesman then that would possibly be much more interesting

If it is Chessman was he from Tunbridge Wells as I seem to recall a gent of that name being involved with Kimber during earlier days? Haven't time now to trawl through O to A just now.

John is correct except for his spelling. CRB Chiesman was a frequent driver for the works MGs in the pre MMM years. With such a distinctive surname i wondered if J. Chiesman might be related.

The spelling I have is 'Cheeseman'. Whether or not that's a correct transcription from the factory records I couldn't say.

My Cheesman must have been predictive spelling as I had typed Chiesmsn and I originally had the i and e transposed.

As Kevin says he was very active in pre MMM days and I say Tunbridge Wells as I believe his family owned a big department store there, which was still there when I lived there in the early 70's.

Ah well, might be a line of possible research for the car's next owner. It might even explain the "mods" but that is pure speculation

It's not a J2 body as it is fitted with J1 doors. Not sure what it is apart from, as pteviously mentioned, possibly a shortened J1 body
