I saw this ad on leboncoin.fr, for parts or for a courageous restoration:

Interesting picture, it would be a real challenge to rebuild it but the asking price could tempt someone?

It is amazing how often cars which appear not to have survived still turn up.

I have been practicing my French.

The chassis number is lost to corrosion but the engine number is 2602A and the gearbox number is 487. The UK registration is WV2189 and French registration is 622 CO 04...

From the reg number it would appear to be between chassis numbers J2266 and J2646

Does this all tally? And does the club know it? Not in the 2017 Register...

Cheers

P

WV 2189 tallies with J2381, a car not previously known to the Register! Its original engine was numbered 971 AJ, so the one that comes with the project won’t be that unit.

The chassis file for J3835 (is that my car???) has the gearbox number as well as other numbers listed. Was this the case for the earlier Js too? If so a trawl through the chassis files would confirm the identity. Aha, just spotted the bonnet, that has the chassis number... will ask...

There is a 2 seater spare wheel carrier so it probably was a J2...

When Mike Allison extracted the car details from the service files which form the basis of the Register database, he didn’t do the gearbox numbers, so to check this one we’d have to see the actual file.

Where did you find that picture, Peter? I can only see three pics with the ad?!

I am in touch through the link at the start of this thread and he sent it to me. He also sent this of the engine number but I cannot make it out. I certainly cannot make out 2602.

The car is east of Paris if anyone is in the area. It is probably all there.

Good project for someone, I reckon. I like "rescue" cars, rather fancied the red one on Salisbury Plain and the D from Weston super Mare, but hands too full to take this one on... I might go and pick it up if someone pays the ferry!

He will check the bonnet for a number tomorrow.

Cheers

P

It's possible (and not uncommonly so) that the block is M type, because 2602A was originally installed in 2M2824. AS far as we know this is the only Triple-M engine bearing that number. WE can check with Kimber House archive on Monday to see which J2 would have had gearbox number 487. The '72' certainly denotes a J.

That looks more like a L1 tank.
The J1 tank is less triangular in shape

I have the original guarantee plate for 2M 2824 (engine no. MG 2602A). It came with my car TG 2977, 2M 3328 when I purchased it in 1976. When I contacted the Register I found that TG 2977 was listed as 2M 2824 although the papers for TG 2977 were for 2M 3328. The register has now been corrected. I believe the previous owner of my car also had at least part of 2M 2824 as well & that some of these parts were used in the rebuilding of 2M 3328 after accidental damage in the 1960's. There is a period photo of TG 2977 taken in the early 60's or late 50's showing the car in good condition (prior to the accident damage?)

Geoff.

Christofer, I have sent you an eamil through the forum, but I have a feeling it wasn't delivered. Would you confirm or deny, please!

Many thanks!
