Am I correct in thinking that the rotation is clockwise on a J2 distributor? Presumably this is the same as a beetle 009 distributor?Do magnetos have a correct direction of rotation if they have no obvious markings? I'm just running a few thoughts through my mind with regards to ignition set up as I'm starting with a "clean slate". Cheers Bob
You are correct, when viewed from the top all Triple-M distributors rotate clockwise as does the VW 009 distributor. Yes, you must fit a magneto with the correct rotation.
Distributor drive rotation on Triple-M engine is clockwise viewed from the top. If you are going to use a mag, the same applies but I believe the rotation of a magneto is generally referred to as if looking at the drive end i.e. from the bottom.
For example, the Scintilla Vertex magneto points cam is stamped 'R' or 'L' under the rotor arm. 'R' refers to right hand (clockwise) operational rotation of the drive end, so anti-clockwise if you are looking at the rotor arm and therefore no good for Triple-M engines. The correct Scintilla points cam should be stamped 'L'. The direction of rotation can be reversed but it is a specialist job (Tom Dark) and involves a replacement cam and auto advance mechanism, which is a bit daunting if you are not familiar with it.
I'm pretty sure that's right - It is 10 years or so since I was experimenting with mags on my Q rep. I am now running Bosch 009 which is a clockwise from the top unit with a suitable centifugal auto-advance. The centifugal mechanism will not work if you try to use a distributor or mag of the wrong rotation. The easiest way to check if your distributor is correct (when fitted) is not to rely upon the arrow markings on the rotor arm but to try to gently twist the rotor by hand in a clockwise direction and you should be able to turn it a 10-15 degrees against a springy resistance. You should not be able to turn it anti-clockwise.
