What is the difference between the vertical drive oil drain housing for an M-type and a J2 ? And how do these compare in turn with the cylinder head oil drain housing from a P-type? The reason I ask is that I believe I have bought the wrong one for my M-type. The one in question has a casting for connecting an oil pipe.

Sounds like you have a P/N-type one, which has a projecting 'neck' with a flange to which the drain pipe bolts onto. As far as I know the M and J ones are the same. You should be able to swap what you have for the correct one.
