What carburettor was fitted to the Le Mans M types? Rather hoping it was a downdraft SU as then this style of carburettor will be accepted as vintage by the VSCC. So far I have not been able to find out when the downdraft type was first introduced. |

I believe this is the engine of the Sir Francis Samuelson Le Mans and Spa car.

I wasn't sure about the Le Mans cars, but thought it highly likely. sam has beaten me to replying with the picture that I hadn't seen before. Certainly the M-types prepared for the 1930 Brooklands Double 12 race were fitted with "an oversize downdraught carburettor" and the traditional Brooklands exhaust with great sucess. This was carried over into the production Double 12 Replica cars and also used on the early C-type fitted with the AA head. So yes, certainly used in the vintage period. I have used a downdraught since 1998 couples with a separate exhaust manifold in the fashion of the Le Mans car ie down and under rather than the Brooklands style.

Excellent, thanks chaps. The picture of the engine is interesting, next to the throttle rod there is a throttle return spring, not a very elegant set up in my opinion. I have used a torsion spring on the throttle spindle and a second spring attached to bulkhead actuating arm. Thanks again for the information |

The choke lever over the rocker cover isn't very practical or elegant either, and where's the cut-out? On the other hand, the whole set-up certainly looks as if it means business.

Unfortunately, the SU D (for downdraught) wasn't introduced until 1931! |

Well I am not going to change it for a Solex, I will just have to see what happens. Maybe a preproduction version was used on the MG to try it out. |

Not afaik. But there is no predicting the eligibility committee’s judgment so who knows you might get away with it ;)
