There appear to be several versions of the valve cover used on M-Types and J-Types.
The first photo shows two castings with the major difference being the edge where it points on the cylinder head. Also, the material of the one labeled M seems to be less smooth and not as shiny.
On some photos of very early M's there was a bracket attached to the cover for the horn. That may explain the two, vertically oriented, holes in the 'early' M cover. (photo 2) The second road test of the M, published in The Motor of July 30, 1929 shows the horn mounted on the side of the valve cover (photo 3)
And lastly, there are covers with the large brass plate with the technical and tuning details of the engine, while some just have a much smaller brass plate attached with two rivets, right in the center of the cover, while I have also seen covers without any brass plate at all.
Is there any information about the chronological order of these valve cover variations?
