Forum:

Looking for details concerning the conversion of F Type 1467 into
L Type 0252 by factory.
Photographs exist but no background details; that I can locate.
Is this a one off?
All the best.

Hi John,
I'm sure it is known. On Ian Ross's page it is written:
An 'F3' tourer that was converted by the factory into the second 'L' type prototype L0252 (L0252-F1467)

Robert and Forum:

Thank-you for the link of photographs to L0252/F1467
I should have linked the photos in my post.
The car is listed on Ian Ross's website and this forum.
Such factory rebuilds/conversions appear to be very rare.

My question was/ is to discover if possible; what prompted this conversion?
Plus any others if known.
This is more the coach building part of the MG story.
All the best.

The database says F1467 (a non-survivor) was a factory demo car converted to become the second L1 prototype (sectotype then? ), L0252 (a survivor). Perhaps worth asking the Club for access to F1467's chassis file or getting in touch with L0252's current owner?

Interesting to examine L0252's chassis for signs of the conversion. Presumably they extended the chassis at the rear and renumbered it at the front... and moved the firewall and fitted a cross tube for the gearbox/resar engine mount.

I believe I have seen a photo of the car in its L guise.

Also F1500 which went to Canada from new I believe, had swept wings if memory serves me right. So over time the F won the 12" brakes, 2 seater body and eventually swept wings. Evolution perhaps. My F and my father's K were works demonstrators in late 1932 so the L?K engine was available too. I wonder what else happened.

And presumably L0251 was a converted F too... and L0253?

Cheers

Cathelijne , Peter and Forum:

Thank-you for your latest comments.
I have been reading round this topic and can find very little
solid information.

Am hoping for details and owners observations on the history of
this part of the MMM story.
Will follow up your ideas and see what develops.
Any other places to look please?
All the best.

L0252 has joined us on several of our MGCC Yorkshire Centre 24/39 Group events over the years and indeed took part in both the 2008 (North York Moors) and 2010 (Lake District and North Pennines) FC&W Register Tours.

Top image is L0252 sandwiched between F1335 (Bob Walker) and PA1806 (Keith Jackson) at the end of a 24/39 Group run.
Lower image is L0252 enjoying a drive through Troutsdale on the Register's 2008 FC&W Tour.

RX 9979, 9980 and 9981 all still exist.

JB succeeded RX in the Berkshire registrations so. JB854 was registered in August 1932
There may be milage in seeing what the cars with adjacent numbers to JB1646 were and check their chassis files.

RX9981 was a works demonstrator, it sounds as if JB1646 was too, the chassis file should tell...
But...
From Ian Ross' site we learn JB1270 was L0252, ex F1467. Is this right?
Terry suggests it is actually JB1646...

Ian also gives us F0946 as L0251 but it is in Japan and converted into a 2 seater racer.
He further suggests the first 30 Ls might have been on F chassis. That should be relatively easy to check...

Cheers

It feels such a long time ago now that it could well have been in period!
If I remember correctly this photo was taken (by J1 owner Roger Goode) not long after the start of our Saturday tour. We stopped for coffee in Rosedale Abbey before ascending Rosedale Chimney Bank, the infamous pre-war 'freak' hill climb, then on through the NYM National Park to lunch at Runswick Bay where the young Kimber used to holiday. All in glorious sunshine, which was an unusual feature on FC&W tours!

Just came across these two pics of JB 1270 which is L0251, converted from F0946, so it seems both the L1 proto and secto types were converted F-types!

So which is it: Castrol or Mobiloil? It appears to be the same car in both photos.
