Hi

As far as i am aware the early L2 was fitted with the 140 (see photo) and the later ones with the 150. No idea when they changed the size or if the 150
was also available as an optional extra for the early cars.

L2004 was supplied with large, chrome lights complete with stone guards. Whether the lights themselves were ordered specially is not known

The car still has them today.

So would it be right to say that both sizes are correct for the early L2’s?
And that the factory would fit the 140 or 150 according to what the customer ordered?

Hello. Halbe.
The factory would have been quite happy to fit the larger headlamps but the owner had the option to purchase them and fit them himself.
Hope that helps you.

Thank you Chris!
I rather like the smaller 140 but on the other hand i am also in favour of keeping our cars “original” maybe period modifications.
So more or less everything i do to my car has to be in keeping with the period and allways has to be reversibel.

Hi Halbe

As far as I am aware the headlamps have been on the car since it was rescued from a scrap yard in the early 1960s. I had thought about changing them but decided against!

Hello George

The 150 are just a bit large but in combination with the swept wings very nice indeed. She is running very well and i enjoy her very much!
Hope you are well
Kind regards
Halbe

Hi Halbe

Early and later L2s is a bit confusing to me, I believe they ( that is all 90) were built before Summer 1933, say in June at the latest, based on the number of J2 /L2 bodies supplied from Carbodies.

I also believe that they had 8" Rotax/Lucas headlamps with painted shells and chrome rims. Later L types built in the Autumn had larger (9") fully chromed headlamps.
Kind regards

Hello Sven,
Thanks for your kind reply. Early and late is indeed confusing for me so all advice is more than welcome. My car was build 05/05/33.
I suppose it all comes down to personal preference as both 140 and 150 were available in period and i am pretty sure that the factory would have sold a client the one they prefered
Do like the headlamps on 2039! They remind me of the ones we had on my fathers Aston Martin mk2 short chassis

Kind regards
Halbe

L2001 had its guarantee plate issued on 15 March 1933 and L2090 had its plate issued on 9 November 1933.
