Evening all,

I wonder if any members can help me with any details, information, results, press articles or photos of 1930s trials competitor J. H. Hibbitt? I gather he competed in both a Midget J2 and an unknown 1287cc MG - whatever model that might be?

Particular events of interest are the...

1934 Inter Club Team Trial / Buxton Trial
1934 Great West MC Spring Trial
1934 Mid Surrey AC London to Brighton Trial
1935 MGCC Abingdon to Abingdon Trial

Does anyone know what the J. H. stood for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you.

I would hope the MGCC had records of the MGCC trial. Have you tried Kimber House ( MGCC) ?

Thank you, Colin.

I must admit that I haven't tried the MGCC yet, but I thought I would see what the members of this fine forum might have first, and then try Kimber House as my proverbial 'Plan B'.

Admittedly a different event to those that I was asking about, but here's a photo of J. H. Hibbitt in MG Magnette BLP 484 during the 1935 MCC London-Land’s End Trial - photo courtesy of Motorsport Images, with grateful thanks.

I expect our pre-war trials expert Colin Butchers will be able to provide some information.
The car with a 1287 cc may have been an NA type?

Hi David

Our last two postings crossed!

The file shows BLP 484 was NA0649 which was delivered new to J H Hibbert in London on 29th December 1934. The car was black with red upholstery and was fitted with a 2 seat body.

Sadly there is no other information on the car which may not have survived.

Many thanks, George - appreciate your input.

So, if BLP 484 was acquired in December 1934, I think we can assume that he used his previous Midget J2 for the other three trials that I mentioned, as they date from May & August 1934 - although from period reports I have found, only the June 1934 issue of Motor Sport magazine actually mentions the J2 in their 1934 Spring Trial report.

The photo is at the foot of Crackington, still popular with spectators today.

Here is another outing of J. H. Hibbitt in his NA0649 at the MGCC Rushmore Hillclimb, May 19th 1935.
See the extract below from July "The Sports Car".

His J2 record will almost certainly be in "How They Ran" which compiled it's data from contemporary sources (The Sports Car" etc), Crowborne & other archived material. I can't get hold of my copy for a bit (indisposed), but I'm sure another member will be along shortly with details.

Coincidentally, I found the same image amongst an online photo library earlier today! - photo courtesy of the National Motor Museum, with grateful thanks...

Thank you, JMH - looking forward to seeing what those publications reveal.

Where on earth did you discover that lot, Mike? - thank you.

Strange that the events I asked about (apart from 1935 Abingdon), don't appear within your list...

5th May 1934 Inter Club Team Trial / Buxton Trial
6th May 1934 Great West MC Spring Trial
3/4th August 1934 Mid Surrey AC London to Brighton Trial
4th May 1935 MGCC Abingdon to Abingdon Trial

So what does anybody know about Midget J2, registration AUW 161?

The J2, AUW 161, first owner, J.H. Hibbitt, is J4103.
This is the entry for the car in “How They Ran”
