Rear Bump Rubber Fixings

What is the correct way of fixing the rear bump rubbers to the steel straps? My car had them fixed with split pins and washers when I got it which seems a strange way of doing it.

I agree with Peter, mine were fitted with Bifurcated copper rivets with the legs bent over the washer.
