I had sufferd from number 1 spark plug oiling up and missing.

I used a simple spark testing tool bought at a boot sale for 20p, (the type that is insurted in the HT lead and the legs moved till the spark stops.) I noticed that the cyclinder ran normally as soom as the gap occured why should this be?

The oiling problem seemed to stop when the tappets for that cyclinder were adjusted to less than recommended gap 6 & 8 thou.

Are the tappet settings more crittical for a P type engine, than say for MGA or MGB engine?

Some 'How to maintain....' car and motor cycle books of the vintage period advised

cutting the plug lead and inserting a non-metal trouser button in order to cure a misfire

or poor starting. This made a gap as outlined above.

WHY it works, I have no idea.

Bob,
I was told a long time ago that inserting the bitton increased the HT voltage at the plug by making it rise higher to jump the larger gap at the button.
