Lower oil control ring

Hi All
I have been told that it is common practice on MMM engines to leave off the piston the lower oil control ring as you get better oiling of the bores!is this true?
Any advice on this would be useful.

I did that to my PA engine when I rebuilt it about 15 years ago. It probably uses a bit more oil but I get good lubrication.

To avoid any possible confusion - Yes, assuming we are talking about 4 ring pistons with 2 oil rings, then the lower one can be omitted.
