My 30 M Type is, as we say over here, a "driver". It had been converted to 12 volt before I purchased it. Recently I purchased on E Bay a 12 volt Lucas " Aaoogah" 1930s period horn. I couldn't resist it. Driving our cars is supposed to be fun and the "aaoogah" sound is great. I removed from the car an old 12 volt Klaxon horn that looks similar to the prewar Lucas motorcycle horns. The horn was mounted on the fire wall.
I was wondering what was used as original in the M Type and where was it mounted?
Just spending a lovely Sunday in New Jersey surrounded by a record 2 foot snow fall. We are 40 miles south of New York City. No MG driving here for awhile.
Mike & Sam The pics in the recent thread on registration numbers might give a clue as to when the horn mounting moved to the front apron. To work it out you will have to go to the annual M production figures I suppose. Two of the cars shown don't have an external horn RX6795 is 2M1594 and the closest M on the register to RX5974 is RX5969 which is 2M0950. The closest RX M on the register to the salonette RX7429 is RX7894 [an ex-salonette] is CM2528. So all you have to do to work out when the horn moved outdoos is to do some sums. Tony Before anybody checks the register - the above was culled from an old copy of the register. On double checking with the latest edition I find that RX5969 is no longer listed - what have you done with it - Bob?
The long bodied horns generally fit under the bonnet in front of the tank, a lot of the flat Altettes are fitted under the front apron, as on my 1930 car. This leaves the O/S engine bay easier to get at the plugs etc.Nick.
I deduce from the above the car below has a chassis number 2251 upwards to 2703.There are many mysteries revealed in the parts list such as when round guards and curved headlamp suports ended after chassis 2703.
My car M2737, mid-1931 was missing its front apron and thereore the horn. I managed to get an early Altette (for the grille) and a 12volt (new) horn in Mumbai(Chor Bazaar, amazing place, everything you could imagine and extremely cheap!). Even though the car is still 6 volt it works perfectly.
