I note that there are three types of bearing available for MMM rear hubs. The standard bearing, one with integral seals and a heavy duty one. If you use the one with integral seals, I presume that you still need to use a seal behind the bearing as well? If so what type of seal should that be?
In the Sports and Vintage catalogue there only appears to be one seal available and that has no description. In Barry Walker's catalogue there are two, one felt and the other metal and neoprene.
Peter, according to Tom Dark there is no such thing as heavy duty, it's just away of charging more for the same. His words not mine. Having just rebuilt my PA's rear end (Car not secretary!!) and like you new to all of this, I made lots of enquires and it turns out that the bearing you buy at your local bearing supplies are the same as you but from the MG Trade at a 10th of the price. I paid ú16.00 for the rear bearings at my local bearing suppliers. Compaired to about ú70!! Mine are sealed high speed. the sealed bit means a neoprean cover fitted to hold the grease in place I guess. Good luck Rodney.
Thanks. I was intending to try a local bearing supplier as I guessed they would be cheaper than an MG specialist. It would help however to know the part number. Do you have the part number?
I have seen double row bearings in these hubs (presume original). They have smaller balls in greater quantity. The original double-row ones I have seem to have less end-play than the brand new single-row type. I think I tried to get some replacements about 30 years ago and was told at that time they were obsolete.
