Hi Can anyone tell me? I have a J2 J2776 and the body I am assured is original but the tub is made from alluminium. Were some made with alluminium originally? I am pretty confident it is the original body as the guy who did it restored it some 30 years ago and he assures me he never rebodied the car? Info much appreciated out of interest. Many thanks |

Hi Andy
As far as I am aware all the Triple-M bodies were made with an ash frame.
The only car that I know of that has an aluminium frame is the NB Airline due to be auctioned this week by R and M auctions. The car was rebuilt following a fire.

I think he meant aluminum skin, George. Not an aluminum tub frame.

The J2 body was skinned originally with a mixture of steel and aluminium, the aluminium section being from the lower door hinge backwards over the wheel arch timbers and around the back of the tub extending down from the top of the body by c. 9 inches.
The rest including the scuttle top was in steel
Hope this helps

Lew, you are right I misunderstood the message!
As a matter of interest the R and M auction yesterday produced the following:-
NB Airline coupe sold for £145600
PA/PB Le Mans works car £78400.
At the other end of the scale the James Bond DB5 Aston Martin sold for £2.9 million!!

Hi George,
I see the PA/PB Le Mans works car auction estimate was from £110000 to £160000, someone has had a good buy!

That's quite a reduction on the NB Airline from its 2008 sale by RM Auctions at US$398,000! A little more realistic this time.

Many thanks Rich, you just described my car!! I was very confident that it was original and as it should be but someone more knowledgeable than I insisted that they were always all steel and never had aluminium in any of the sheet work? Your reply and everyones reply is much appreciated, many thanks to all.
