When I began to try to put the pieces of my car back together I purchased a number of pictures from the Register which proved very useful. My favourite example shows a delivery of M-type bodies and the detail is much better than any copy reproduced in a book.
Zooming in on the detail there is a vast amount of useful information. In this case the detail of the underbody is amazing and probably unique.
Unfortunately, I found that the Register prints I bought were expensive and something of a gamble - some pictures were very good (like the example above) but others were not.
The problem always seems to be that a convential photographic print is overly expensive and the quality very hit or miss.
Would it be possible to scan the best original pictures at high resolution (perhaps zooming in on detail)and produce a disc for every Triple-M model which the Register could easily and cheaply reproduce and sell to help Register funds? No doubt discs could be protected against piracy but with the right price the market is so specialised that the incentive to cheat would be minimal.
The main problem is that the job would take time and skill and the right volunteer/s to build a library of discs - one for each Triple-M model.Once made the discs could be produced cheaply for sale as required with perhaps occassional updates as more period photos are made available. Wouldn't it be nice to own a set?
Good idea, Sam. I scanned the 2 1/4 by 3 1/4 pictures I had of my J2 taken with a Box Brownie in the 30s and printing them on A4 glossy paper revealed lots of useful detail that wasn't readily apparent in the small original prints.
It's a time consuming job, but doesn't require any great skill - just pop the pictures on the scanner and press the scan button!
A couple of years ago the idea of a photo database was discussed. I still think it a useful idea. However, the need was somewhat diluted by the presence of such a database at http://www.mgmmm.com/ This is a wonderful, albeit limited, site. I would encourage those with access to good photographs of original cars or original detail to submit their photos to that site.
Thank you very much Lew, for your positive recommendation. We recently uploaded several historical photographs . In an article of the August Bulletin we explained how it started and what our intentions are. We hope that with the help of Bulletin readers and website visitors more photo’s come available.
We have time and volunteer to put many more photo’s on the site. We think the website can be improved by more period photo’s. This way we can help each other.
