EXACTLY doctorbob!

The idea behind a forum is that it TEASES information that lies dormant.

I'vw been talking to a fellow, the same age as his 1932 Js (has an M as well)

He's rebuilt diffs for years.

Apparently the tab washers deteriorate with time.

Your diff then starts to migrate around inside.

Death of all diffs.

Be nice to have a You Tube tutorial on stripping down and rebuilding a diff.

The logic, the knowledge of how long things are expected to last, salient point with Our Stuff.
An "easy job" if you're schooled in the logic of what is happening.

ON THE BRIT BOOKS LINK TO J2 BOOK.

NO STOCK FOR TEN DAYS. They let me cancel my order, no probs.

Why can't the CLUB make a (corrected) picture library of what the book outlined????

Nick's Dept are on the case
BUT, as I've said..Foresight. STORYBOARD what you want to GET ACROSS. It is a communication exercise. Remember THE MESSAGE you are trying to get across, and the PICTURES should dictate themselves.

We're talking about one man's attempt at putting something across. His personal passion, like Mike Hawke...

To bring "mechanics" up to date.
More and more, fettling parts to fit, is HISTORY.
We now have fitters. That Fit.
Parts are cut, machined to exact tolerances.
Engineering is becoming more laptop computer, solid state modules, that yield zero to any trained "eye."

The cars, and the knowledge may still be in the heads and hands of many, but why can't we pool our corporate resources IN THE NAME OF THE COMPANY that the club backs. Create a photo archive to run into the future with our cars...?

I have been contacted by a member who thinks that I am proposing a CAD created J2 etc.
Heaven's NO, no, no!

I am suggesting the MMM cars that we love are flying in the face of where automotive design is going.

The knowledge our members have in their heads and hands is the lifeblood of our cars.
That fettling, unique knowledge of when to monitor every part of our machines, could do with being documented. The internet is essential a "free" publishing area for such knowledge.

Hi Gary
I believe that is in part what this website is doing. Gradually we are building up a repository of knowledge that will be priceless in years to come. What we really need is someone to collate all those snippets of knowledge into one database, any takers?

Hi Nick

The Register records contain a huge amount of data, both written and visual. Recording the restoration of a specific car has, I'm sure, been recorded visually by many people who have been brave enough to restore a car from the ground up. Not to mention recording the expense and time involved.

To manage the expectation of recording a car restoration, from start to finish, on camera would be almost impossible in studio conditions. Time, expense and expertise would be a challenge above all.

A pictorial database of images would be useful, I guess. Some topics cross pollinate between models and others more specific. Our friends in Holland have created an excellent model to either emulate or support.

As a photographer and current curator of the register records, the key pressure point is time. In addition, resource to undertake such a project Would be significant. Not to mention finding a wiling volunteer to take pictures of their car from chassis upwards.

There are also the nuances that we all find between our individual handmade cars that we all believe are either original or correct to agree with or otherwise. What is correct?

To date, the MMM website has been a superb base for both technical written and photographic exchange. Simply ask the question and hey presto the answer will come. Thanks to this site, we can also post pictures of whatever we need help with or just for the hell of it. There are also many events and workshops on the annual timetable to glean whatever is needed, even if only to take pictures of other cars or spend hard earned money on parts or outsourced expertise.

There is also the age old "Blower" to refer to if all else fails. My Father photocopied the relevant sections to get all oily in the garage, still have them even now.

Speaking as both Registrar and perhaps one of the younger MMM'ers, put something in and you get something out of this excellent group, both on the web and in person. It's a great experience and very satisfying. There's got to be a great quote hear but it's Friday night and I've driven 1200 miles this week!

So, in response directly, if anyone has an end to end restoration recorded on digital camera, send me a disc and they can be made available on the web.

Regards

Robin

Thank goodness the days are getting longer again!

This forum is my MG bible, like the bible it is open to interpretation and some may see one view and others another, sometimes I ignore the views as they are a bit "fundamental" for my liking. I see very few requests for help unanswered.I find many requests for the "lower left sleeve grommet holder" producing offers with postage costs only. It is a fantastic resource and there are many others available if you hunt them down on the www. Then you can tell all who use this forum of their presence.

The WEB Master is masterful in his organizational and editorial skill as current topic enthusiasts will recognize.

Anyone can add value to the site ... go for it those who wish to !!

Robin. To reply to a point you made. I merely suggested lighting (Couple of the cheapest lamps) So that any photographs are not half shadow. Couple of chairs, boxes, anything to hand. So the area in question would be lit, all reference points visible.
Information graphics.
My car has a 13/60 Spitfire/Herald engine and box. I've had it a month. So not really archive material! Digital cameras, hence digital information, are providing affordable accessable, user friendly bits of kit.
If different people could answer a call for different jobs to be photographed...

A technical expert could create a job sheet, with specialist "bullet points" of know how. This would have an arrow pointing to a blank oblong.
"This text becomes this photo."
There are unique, five minute jobs, that are not well described in older publications, that could (pardon the pun) have a bit more light shed on them.
Definitive records on EXACTLY how it goes.
I see it as "harnessing knowledge" in a very accessable and open manner.

If you Google Richard Atwell's VW Bus pages... This will give the loosest idea of how a portfolio of MMM jobs could look. This is what I found after 60 seconds on the Net.

You would get the resolution quality of a Coffee Table book, and tailored to Our cars.

No studio shoots. Just members, maybe a mate, taking the photos of individual jobs. Showing MMM detailing, layout, routing blah blah...
If a comprehensive list was published.
Members could "populate" it.

When you were going to do a "featured job" A job sheet could be e mailed to you.
You photograph the stages suggested on the job sheet.
Send the JPEG files to the Club. They can then run with the text, as a feature.
It would highlight different elements in the cars!! even!

Just a series of What Fasteners Go Where, Thread pitch, unique heads to bolts could be useful. A link to a supplier.
How much have our cars changed since the 30s?
Just go and find what our Dutch cousins have done to create beautiful, photo reference pages.

Robin H - I've downloaded the photos of my PA body rebuild onto a CD, which I'll post to you in the next few days. It was a professional "body only" rebuild, so the rest of it is pretty rough. I couldn't afford the time or money to strip it completely and polish every nut & bolt. Although minor works had been carried out before, this was the first time since 1934 that the body had been removed, so the photos of stripping it in particular may help somebody. While the body was off I took the opportunity to fit a new wiring loom. As can be seen, I had already fitted twin batteries, with two isolating switches just in front of the driver's seat (just under my knees). Also the exhaust system was already non-standard. Feel free to publish this whatever way you want. Acknowledgement to Alistair Buxton, of The Whins, Westfield, West Lothian, alistair@thornsgarage.fsnet.co.uk, who did the rebuild and took the photos.
