Here is a photo taken in September 1946 at Bo'ness hill Climb It is a copy of a print given to me about 20 years ago, and the date was written on the original print. I have no further info on it, but I'm investigating with experts on Bo'ness. I originally though it might be a T type, but on closer inspection think it could be a J2 - what do you think? I'd be interested to learn any info anyone has, or from the Register, but in any case I hope it will add slightly to the overall record. I cannot make out the entry number, and it partially obscures the registration, but what can be seen reads xx 4516.
As corrected by Robin, below, registration is xx 4156

Hi Colin
I read it as xx 4156.
J 2338, MMM 2692, is registered SW 4156 and was last heard of in 1966 with Brian Galbraith.
The front wings don't look J2 to me but the rest of it does.
Regards
Robin

Yes, sorry Robin, slip of the keyboard, definitely 4156, and SW is likely in Scotland. I've now found it in Ashley Strachan's MMM list from 1989, wrongly listed as a PA (the windscreen supports and brakes are more J2 than PA). I think the front wings confused me initially. Ashley has this car owned by D Courtney of Glasgow in the 50s. I'll get back to the Bo'ness experts and see if the name means anything to them.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there: The car certainly looks like a J2, and aren't they swept wings? The rear ones support this view, look at the rear end. Then the front ones looked at closely are faired in. Just a thought! I have checked in Mike Hawke's listing, and SW4156 was on J 2338: much too early to be a swept wing car, but these could have been a retro-fit. The car is listed as taking part in the SSCC "Anniversary Run" in October 1947. No driver is known for it, though. No ther clues, though. One day, perhaps we will get the whole history of MG sorted out... Best wishes, Mike |

Thanks Mike,
I reckon the front wings are cycle ones with a splash fairing. With the benefit of an enlarged version of the photo, I think I can see the front wing supports going to the top of the wing, and also I can see a line of discontinuity between the cycle wing and the fairing, on the offside. Looking at the nearside, just in front of the rear wing, I can't see a running board.

Yes Colin I agree, although the very first swept wing J2 (J0251, which was kept back until late '33, when it was sold to John Thornley, his own story to me when the car first re=surfaced) was fitted with stays passing through the wing. I have never really studied the cars in that sort of detail, but one I worked on certainly had the wing stay passing through the wing to give a top mounting.
Splash guards were fitted to many trials cars in the late thirties after the success of the fitting to the Crackers cars... they meant that the driver and passenger didn't need to take the feed of neat mud during events from the front wheels!! Definitely no sign of running boards, though.

Colin, if you find out who the driver was, please let me know. The front wings on this car (J2338) were/are not either swept or cycle with splash guard. They are rather curious & fill in most of the inside between mudguard & chassis, the rears also drop down much lower at the front edge than std cycle mudguards. The car still wore these mudguards as shown in the photo until quite recently (& may even still do).
Looks like he needed them that day too!
