Are N trunnions the same as the K as we are having some trunnion lids laser cut next week.
Can any one help on the thickness of the lids?

I'm sure others will know better than I but I thought that although the K and N boxes are basically the same size - ie to take the wider springs - the K casting, and therefore lid, has 5 fixing points whereas the N casting has only 4.

Right or wrong ?

Andy,

N type trunnion boxes are made for a chassis where the rails at the front are not parallel, so the spring slot is at an angle to the mounting, where K type boxes are made for a parallel chassis rails so the spring slot is parallel to the mounting. I hope I have explained this clearly. They are not interchangeable, or the same.
Paul.

On my car N902 [origional chassis] the chassis rails are parallel over the length of the front spring, the rails then diverge to a point in front of the rear spring forward mount .The trunnion boxes I have fit well and have 5 bolt covers.Geoff

The covers on the trunnion boxes on NA0960 have only 4 bolts as have my spare set of N type trunnion boxes. As far as I know the boxes fitted are original - the car had never been dismantled when I first bought it.

Why only 4 bolts as against 5 on those fitted to Js, Ps and Ls which are all smaller and lighter than an N?

Paul,

If you have a look at the picture of an N chassis on page 10 of the owner's manual you will see that the front section of the chassis is parallel from the dumb iron to behind the trunnion box. The springs therefore enter the trunnion box in line with the chassis. This means that the N trunnion box casting is basically the same as the K.

As Andy rightly points out, the K has five bolts to secure the cover plate whilst the N has four.

Ross,

The cover for the trunnion box has an overall depth of 0.25". The upper flange section is 0.125" thick and the underneath circular section which acts as the end stop for the trunnions is also 0.125" thick.

PS I need one for an N.
