Hello. Thought this might be of interest as to how the hood is gathered. Great description from the seller. Wonder if this P-Type survives?

Ian,

This car (MG 3554) is not listed on our register, but that does not mean that it does not survive.

Peter.

First time I've seen a P type in coupé de ville mode. Looks set up for wartime use - RAF pilot perhaps?

How far do you think you would get before you had to go back and pick up the hood?

Nice pic though...

The cliché about RAF pilots being the users of MGs in WW2 was certainly based in fact but has become fixed by the makers of films on the subject from the 1954 'Reach for the Sky' onwards, as discussed a year or two ago. (Does anyone know of earlier 'Pilot / MG' sequences?)

It wasn't always the case. PA 0603 was 'in' the RAF from 1940 and the history file has photographs 'in service' in full wartime trim. ( They would have been in our 'Historic Photos' section, had permission to submit not been refused by the MMM management.)

However, this lovely, blown PA was not owned by a pilot but by an RAF accountant NCO, Tom Mealing, who, it seems, was firmly told not to park it anywhere near the Officers' Mess but to keep it out of sight.

Bob.

Herewith a comparable photo of PA0603 whilst 'in service' with the RAF, c.1943. Nice paintwork round the blower cowl.

How did one decide on which headlamp to put the mask, back then?

(Thanks to permission from Peter Green.)

Bob.

Hi Bob
Wouldn't the cowl have been put on the headlamp that remained on when dipped lights were selected?

My Father who was an RAF pilot at the end of WW2 had a pre-war MG, not sure which model, unfortunately my father is no longer with us so unable to find out. My main reason for buying the dismantled J2 in Cyprus.

With Rovers who also utilised the tipping reflector system, both headlamps were illuminated in the ' beam ' position, .....when dipped, the drivers side ( o/s ) was extinguished and the passengers ( n/s )reflector was tipped down, virtually just illuminating the gutter. Unless of course MG had other ideas ?

Here's my PA ready to go to a "Wartime" themed rally in 1992, with Isobel in a suitably 1940s outfit. The white paint on the wings is actually the stuff you paint onto greenhouse windows, washes off readily. The headlamp cowls have now been sold to Mike Leckstein, IIRC

Fortunately for you I don't have a photo that includes me in my Biggles outfit .

Colin, you remember correctly. I have them, and displayed them at a NEMGTR GOF, with my PA. They got alot of attention as they are very rare on this side of the pond.
