I ordered and received today copies of the original records from John Inness, MG Car Club . Two items have come to light :-

1) There is an invoice for " modifying Headlamp Brackets and Carburetters " cost 15/- I assume this is the move of the headlamp supporting lugs I have recently read about to improve the lighting.

2) " Supplying & Fitting Taper Plates " cost £8 - 8s

....what are ' Taper Plates ' does anyone have any idea?

Thanks

Chris

I imagine these are the 2 degree (or is it 2.5 degrees?) tapered alloy wedges that are generally fitted between the spring top plates and the front axle to increase the castor angle. A very common mod and found on most cars of this type.

Thanks Dick,

Possibly the wedges are in the multitude of boxes of the dismantled items, I will have a look on my next visit to Cyprus.

Chris,
These might be what are generally known today as the "axle wedges" sometimes fitted with front axles. Depending on how your springs settle in use, the castor angle at the front wheels can alter, giving sometimes quite alarming characteristics. You won't know if you're likely to need them until the rebuild is far enough advanced to have all weight added at the front end, or even driven the car.
Sounds pretty expensive for those though, even including fitting!

My Apologies,

The cost for ' Supplying & Fitting Taper plates ' should have been 8/8 d....thats eight shillings and eight pence, not £8 - 8s, not used to the old three columns and there are no pound signs on the invoice.

Thanks for the comment that got me thinking!
