Hello Rod

We do have 2M0266 listed on the Register. It is an old entry from 1966 and there is no mention of its whereabouts. Can you possibly post a picture of the knuckle stamping and the car etc?

Regards
Dick

To match the engine no. photo; in build sequence; ch. no. is likely 2M 266?, see MMM Register.

didn't all chassis numbers start with 251, the old Abingdon telephone exchange number? That would make 266 very early wouldn't it?

Not the M's as they started production before the move to the pavlova building IIRC

Anyone know the chassis number of the oldest known survivor and is there a picture of it?

Is there any evidence of what became of the prototype/pre-production cars?

Sam,

The earliest one on the Register is 2M0257 and it is in Norway.

Is this it, 2M0747, reg VR4730 it's being advertised as been the oldest M example...and it's in Dorset!. Can't see how it can be from that chassis number though. Anyone know of it's history?

I think the ad for 2M/0747 means to say it is the oldest surviving M-type produced at Abingdon following the end of M-type production at Oxford though the headline for the ad implies it is simply the oldest.

Is there any way of checking that it really was the first Abingdon M-type? It would have been an interesting car but very clearly it has been very extensively rebuilt.

It could be my imagination, but does anyone else see a VERY light numeral 4 just to the right and slightly below the second 6 on the dumb iron stamping?

M types did start at 251 in Oxford, and according to the chassis records 2M 0748 onwards were Abingdon built. I have never heard a plausible explanation why they started at 251, and why the telephone number at Abingdon was 251!
The 18/80 Mk 2 show car was chassis A0251 in late 1929.Going back further, the 14/40 Mk 1V of November 1927 was chassis 2251 215174! All according to "Oxford to Abingdon".
Does there look to be a small "C" to the left of the "M"?
CM 2663 with engine 2406A was a coupe, but M 2664 was a 2 seater Black with engine 2416A! Engine 2496 A was in 2M 2692 2 seater Black.
According to my copy of the files!
2M 0257 had registration number RX 5046.
As far as I know none of the well known trials cars survived, WL 6555, 6 and 7 unfortunately.
It would be interesting to compare chassis numbering stamping, as it seems reasonable that the did the major numbers during chassis manufacture, and then on the line put in the last number, which is suggested here.(Cannot look at mine at the moment!)

Mike,
Your suggestion of adding the last number on the line is interesting. Is it known whether this practice occurred with other models? In the case raised by Lew what chassis number was on the chassis plate attached to the body?
