At what point in the manufacturing cycle was the PA/PB chassis stamped with its number? When the decision was made to convert the last 27 PA cars to PB specification at what stage of the manufacturing cycle were these 27 cars?

Does anyone know any chassis numbers for the 27 converted PA's?

The range starts somewhere around PA2030 - my car is PA2052, one of the last, the converted cars apparently taken at random from the line. I've seen the numbers somewhere but can't recall where at present - I'll let you know if I find them!

Graham,
That is very interesting. If they were taken at random from the line then a possible scenario is that the PA number had to be removed from the dumbiron and replaced with a PB number unless the selection was right at the front of the line. Did the PA and PB share the same production track - don't even know whether there was more than one! Some how I had the idea that completed PA cars that were surplus to sales requirements were then specially treated to remove engine & gearbox and instrument panel for replacement with PB items. Was the radiator grill changed at the same time or was it possible that he new PB had a honeycomb grill??

My car is PB0602, converted from PA 2137 and left the factory on 30th Dec. 1935.
Here is a copy of the factory chassis log showing allthe converted cars.

Also my car has PB0602 stamped on the dumb iron and PA2137 stamped on the bonnet hinge.

p.s. PB0601 is Dolts car. Left the factory on the same day and now sits in the paddocks next to PB0602. Thats quite something

Graham,
Fantastic information, particularly that the bonnet hinge carries the PA number. This, and the fact that they entered the line after some 237 PB's had been commissioned, means that the PA number had to be ground off before the PB number was applied.

Is there an explanation why the engine number appears to be about 260 higher than the chassis number - I wonder what the earliest PB block number is?

Is there any factory listing with the body type/number, rear axle, gearbox and dynamo numbers?

Looks like I am mistaken re the starting point of converted chassis - looks like only one shows a lower chassis number than mine, and that is well out of sequence (PA 1960)

My PA 2032 was built 10-4-35. The build list supplied by the MGCC shows PA2039 built the day after as converted to PB0595 with engine 1018APB, no date given.

So I wasn't so far out then - I imagine these early numbers were cars that had been returned to the factory as unsold/unsatisfactory, or maybe the first 'experimental' PBs?
