There is a lovely trophy due to be auctioned by www.sworders.co.uk on 14th May.

The trophy, a model of the streamlined MG, was presented to Goldie Gardner for achieving 186.6 mph in 1938.

I would love to have it on my mantel piece!

George,

It is indeed a lovely trophy, lot 482

The website is www.sworder.co.uk ( just one "s" less at the end.)

Thank you for mentioning it.

Mmmmmmm, that is nice and I'd love to be able to add that to my own collection! I think the condition looks a little poor though, with quite a bit of wear and tear.

I wonder how close the £800-£1200 estimate will be?

I think the pewter tankards look like better value, and far more useful...

Oh to have about £14000 to be able to snap up the 'lot' (no pun intended)!

The 120mph Brooklands badge was awarded to Gardner whilst driving K3007, hence the 007 short-hand. There used (early 1970s) to be a small "Goldie Gardner" display at the NMM which had his 120mph badge in it, mounted much the same as the one up at auction. Maybe it was this one, on loan at the time (I don't know if they gave out more than one badge to a driver).

Whatever, the estimate is too high for me!

Beware 20% buyers premium +VAT = 24% to add to price plus an extra 3% if you bid on line.
Did the owners of this house have a family connection to GG ?

It would seem that there must have been a Gardner connection of some sorts 'TH', either that or the seller acquired the items from another auction memorabilia in the past at some point?

I can report that the M G Car Club with the encouragement and support of the Triple-M Register decided to attend the sale and bid for one or more of the items, up to an affordable (and to us a sensible) limit.

Regrettably the successful bids were very significantly over the auctioneer's estimates and our budget (not the first time this has happened!) and we understand that these lots were snapped up by dealers.

For the record, here are the hammer prices:
480 Brooklands 120mph badge £2,300
481 Brooklands 124mph badge £3,600
482 Silver Trophy in the form of EX135 record car £4,800
483 Two RAC Belgique gilt bronze awards £450
484 A bronze RAC Belgique award £340
485 A bronze RAC Belgique award £400
486 BRDC Gold Star award £5,900
487 The Seagrave Trophy winner's plaque £1,600

Huge thanks are due to Bob Milton and George Wilder for interrupting their busy lives to attend the auction. That's life!

Wow - those prices are well above estimate!

Pity we could not afford to buy one of the items.
