A friend is trying to trace an MG owned by her father, with the registration CVK998. When she told me it was a 1936 car, I checked the online T register, but no luck. However, the DVLA vehicle search tells me it was first registered 25/03/1936, that it is currently taxed or on SORN with an engine capacity now of 1056cc and painted black. Could this be an overbored PB, or a foreign engine? I don't have a copy of the register, so could someone please check and let me know if it is known. Some period photos may be available to the current owner

A similar capacity was recorded for an also DVLA registered 1937 MG saloon upon which I found no information (Search 'MG Saloon DPP 663').
In my experience, Local or DVLA engine 'sizes' are not necessarily accurate.

Robin - I've emailed you, thanks.
Bob - Yes I'm puzzled by the size, which I can't relate directly to anything. 1172 might have been a clue . I don't know if there is an overbore for the PB that would go as big as this. Perhaps you are right, and it is simply a mistake. If the current owner makes contact, perhaps we'll find out.

Hi Colin,
I do not think it would be possible, even on a very good casting, to bore a PB block out sufficiently to get to 1056 cc. My calculator says that this would be a bore of 63.6 mm or about 142 thou over bore on standard. Received wisdom is that anything over 60 thou is pushing your luck, unless you go to the extent of deliberately mis-aligning the bores or what David Allison has called V-engines. I have no experience at all in this area, so someone else may be able to prove me wrong.

Hi All
I own CVK 998 and its a 60thou over. (PB0333)
I have contacted Colin off line and will let you know what transpires later.
It was great to see the registration number crop up on the Forum as the car has been in limbo since about 1955 and has past through a few hands in pieces.
I have recently finished the engine and had it running for the first time last weekend.
A picture of it is on the members gallery taken a few years ago.

Hi Russ,
Thanks for your email, and I have passed your address on to Judy, who will no doubt be in touch soon, as she is quite excited to have traced her dad's old car.
Cheers,
Colin

Hi Andrew,
Not seen much of you lately here - I hope you are well. Russ has answered the question, so it seems the DVLA simply has the wrong capacity.
How's the PB?
Cheers,
Colin

Hi All
Just a note to thank Colin for his help in putting his friend in touch with me ie the Daughter of the original owner of CVK 998.
She has sent me photos of the car at the family home when it was new, so I was delighted to receive them.
When Nick gets the updates on the forum in place I will post the photos.
