I was given some old copies of the ' Practical Motorist ', in one ( dated April 22 1939 ) page 932 was this photograph. I expect this is a well documented photograph, please excuse me if it is. The caption underneith reads ' E. R. King ( M.G. ) meets the sand-bags on Bluehills Mine in the Land's-End Trial '

E R King's car was a TA, Reg Number EOP 400 and his Trial number was 307. The car has just cleared Bluehills 1, and assuming that he actually got round the corner without turning over, is then faced with the start of Bluehills 2, which to this day is a fearsome section. I wonder whether EOP 400 has survivied ?

A point of interest is that he had smaller wheels (16 inch?) on the back, proving that they were available before the war. |

The "works" Cream Cracker TA's were fitted with 16" rear wheels in 1938 - as I recall being told by someone who knows a lot more than me about TA Trial Cars!.
Is there any record of the chassis number of "EOP400" ?.
We are here for a good time, not a long time !. |

Given the luxury of Google Earth - can anyone pinpoint the original location of this photo ?.

The start of Blue Hills 2 is at 50deg 19 mins 17.56N and 5deg 11min 38.08W on Google earth. You go up and then sharp left and right up a steep ZigZag

Sorry Colin, according to Cowbourne, E. R. King was in EOP 24 number 307 as you say. F. H. Wheelock was number 299 and in EOP 400 another t type. Both managed Silver medals, for failing one hill. 'OP' is Birmingham B and the registration documents are destroyed! Maybe they knew each other! Did not know that Bluehills 1 & 2 were used before the war. I now see, in Cowbourne, that they were introduced in 1937, after a re-design in 1936. Cheers, Mike

You are absolutely correct Mike This was a "should have gone to Specsavers" moment. I checked with my copy of Cowbourne, found Mr E R King and then looked at the wrong line for his Reg Number. Not helped by the late Mr Cowbourne's use of 4 point type-face (or smaller). I hoped to post a map of the Buehills Sections together with a photograph of a certain NA climbing Bluehills 2 in 1973, but I have a new scanner and the technology has completely defeated me for the present Might try agsain next week.
